Default trains in uk?

I'm spending about 2 weeks in england in June/July and I want to travel mostly by train considerind the amount of time I have and how slow buses are (and not necessarily that much cheaper). Should I purchase the Young Person Railcard? and should I just wing it as far as buying tickets once I'm there or should I buy in advance from home? Any help is more than welcome!
Thank you
Sol

Train tickets are a lot more expensive if you buy them right before you travel. Buying in advance or buying a rail pass is a lot cheaper. You can check out schedules and prices on http://www.thetrainline.com
