Hi,

Has anyone taken the Taieri Gorge Railway between Dunedin and Queenstown?

Is it worth the extra money and how does it compare with the Tranz Alpine between Christchurch and Greymouth?

I have never heard of the Taieri Gorge railway and I live in Queenstown!
The tranz alpine in very good (even if a tad expensive)
There used to be a steam train that ran from
Kingston to Fairlight called the Kington Flyer. (Kingston is at the end of lake wakatipu). I believe the train is still
going but cannot confirm.

Cheers,
Shane

The Taieri Gorge Railway runs between Dunedin and Middlemarch with a connecting bus to Queenstown. The connection makes it a little inconvenient although I've heard that it is a great old train.

This train isn't run by TranzAlpine, which explains why it doesn't appear on rail maps of New Zealand. Not many people have heard of it.

TranzAlpine still operates the Kingston Flyer, although this appears to be too much of a tourist train.

It is a little more expensive than the Tranz Alpine. It would be interesting to hear opinions from people who have travelled on both trains.
