Hey - You'll be pushing it!!!! That is a lot of driving in a short time - give your self time to have a holiday!
Definitely go to Christchurch (my fave city in NZ) and Queenstown if you are into action sports. Skip Wellington - it is a crap hole.
Oh yeah, and definitely go to Rotarua - the smelliest place on earth!! - You have to see it and smell it to believe it!!
Have Fun

12 days is enough time to quickly do New Zealand as long as you fly into Auckland and out of either Christchurch or Dunedin.

You'll be pressed for time as long if you have to make your way back to Auckland within 12 days though - unless you take a one-way flight back to Auckland to connect with your flight out of NZ.

Definetly go to Auckland and Wellington - two fantastic harbour cities, although Queenstown and Picton are also well worth visiting.

Also make sure you go to either Fox or Franz Josef Glacier and go on a glacier walk. It's an amazing experience.

I would skip Christchurch, though. It's dead boring!

Suggestions:
Rotorua - to see geothermal stuff. If you talk nicely to the locals they may tell you where the free natural hot springs are (they are on just off the Rotorua to Taupo Road, after the "Murupara" turnoff). The Polynesian Pools (hot springs that you pay to get into!) in Rotorua are good too.
Central Plateau moutains - in the middle of the north island are quite scenic (and on the main road). There are some nice one-two hour walks there.
Wellington - centre of government, does have the national museum, which is reasonably good (and free).
Nelson - Abel Tasman kayaking - beautiful area, and can do guided day trips that take you into the national park
West Coast South Island- a wallk up the Glaciers is a must.
Queenstown - adrenalin junkies, but is quite pricey (but hey, you're on holiday)
Christchurch - if you can get there on the weekend check out the Arts Centre markets. Lots of locally made arts and crafts.
Kaikoura - whalewatching is another biggie, although be warned that this needs to be booked in advance!

Back to Auckland quickly!?! (if you are flying out of Christchurch it is easier!).

The Coromandel is also nice - you can get a taste of it by stopping at Hahei beach - there are nice beaches (including a hot water one - more hot springs), and a good backpackers there (Tatahi lodge).
Also, Waitomo to go black water rafting (not as scary as it sounds - basically float through glow worm caves in an inner tube)is also worth it

All in all, you will be pushed for time, but with careful planning it is do-able.

NZ is rather small 1600km top to bottom. Car rental best way as sightseeing is terrific.Consider ferry charges both ways north and south island if flying out of Auckland airport. NOT CHEAP. plus your fare $50 Each way not including vehicle.

Note that speed cameras are big business in NZ. when renting a car and you use credit card. Tickets are put against the card so you get nasty surprise if you are being less than attentive 1 month or so later.
