It depends where you want to stay (near the city centre, in Kings Cross, Manly, near the beach, etc.)

If you want to be near the city centre or Kings Cross my first choice would probably be the Wood Duck Inn or the Blue Parrot.

I think the Harbour City Backpackers is good... close to the city and parklands. http://www.harbourcitybackpackers.com.au

I've in Sydney right now and I stayed at a few places... Jolly Swagmans, Eva's Backpackers (both in Kings Cross), Footprints (near Central Station) and a place in Manly beach that I forgot.

The dorm room in Jolly Swagmans was incredibly messy, with literally a pile of trash under my dorm bed. I told them and they cleaned it a big, and discovered later that it was trash from several backpackers ago (not the current habitants!). The breakfast deal was ok but I got out as soon as I could and went to Eva's right down the street and it was MUCH nicer!!! I wouldn't recommend Footprints as it is a big exensive and they advertise free internet and free breakfast and you get neither (well, I don't consider free toast and tea to be breakfast!) and the rooms are tiny and dingy..although the reception area and kitchen are quite nice and there are lot of activities.

Hey mate, I'd suggest you go to the Sydney Central HI. It's like a top hotel, spotlessly clean and still has a great atmosphere where you can meet lots of people.

Hi there. spent 6 weeks in Sydney. Fabulous touristy place. Would suggest u go to Bondi beach for a stay. It is only a short tran/bus ride to downtown Sydney if u want to explore the city( strongly reommmend u do)Visit the rocks. Get the transit pass and travel the ferries to the differnt stops, You will greatly enjoy those ferry rides.Do not forget Lunar park near the bridge.after u walk over the bridge. I spent 3 weeks in Kings cross and had no worries at all. Bonus is the lovely harbour and park there.

Don't forget to visit Bondi's neighbour....Coogee. It has a wicked beach and a visit to Googee isn't worth it until you have been to the Palace on a Sunday afternoon for a few drinks over the beach with some funky tunes in the background!

Thumbs up

Hey there,
I would recommend Billabong Gardens in Newtown:
www.billabonggardens.com.au
This is a really cool, relaxed hostel. Nice and clean and really good value. But whatever you do you must visit Newtown - Billabong is in Newtown - as it's where all the students hang out. So plenty of cheap restaurants, really cool cafes, heaps of 2nd hand clothes shops and some great bars - NOT backpacker bars! This is where you will meet other Aussies. If you want to experience the real Sydney, you gott Billabong Gardens a stay here.

I recommend Aarons' Hotel

http://www.aaronshotel.com.au

3 stars - best to rent it with a couple of friends. We had the "family" room, 4 bunks and 1 double bed. It had a little kitchen facility and a bathroom. Very clean, very spacious and very affordable.

Oh, it's right at the end of China Town, and 5 mins walk to Darling Harbour!
