Should i be booking a hostel now, before i get there?.I've also been told that you can sometimes find people who are willing to share a car, petrol etc? is this a possiblity?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Staying in hostels is a great way to meet other travellers.

I would normally advise travellers to be spontaneous and not book anything, however Sydney can get very busy (with all the good hostels filling up) during the Christmas/New Year period so you may want to book a hostel in Sydney in advance.

Don't book any of your other accommodation in advance. Keep your travel plans flexible.

When you get to Sydney look at the noticeboards in hostels to see if there's anyone with a car who wants to share a lift in exchange for your share of petrol. It's not always reliable (since there may not be someone going where you want to go) but it is worth checking before you decide to buy a bus or train pass. You can also try BUG'ride sharing site: http://australia.bugride.com.

I totally agree - might be an idea to book a place for when you arrive cos after a long flight, the last thing you want to do is go searching for a hostel! And not making any advance booking is good because there is always the cahnce of meeting new people especially in hostels who convince you to go somewhere not planned with them! Its an adventure. While I was in Oz, we would just ring a couple of hostels the day before we arrived and arrange a room - we never had any real problems and a lot of people we met would just turn up! So you prob won't have any problems!

Would suggest you get a hostel membership card since you often are available for discounts. Also book your room/bunk for a couple of nights for first time so you have time to get over jet lag. It does catch up with you.Just keep in mind it is a hostel not a hotel. At times like a college dorm without staff around.Kitchens are available but supply your own cutlery so you know you have it. Pack in your checked luggage if any sharp objects in your kit. DO NOT take as cabin baggage. That includes propane lighters and such.Better yet do not take any propane articles on the plane.Matches are banned as well.
