Toad Hall is the nicest of the places that you have listed and Hotel Bakpak really isn't too bad either. You just have to be prepared for a big hostel if you decide to stay there.

There are some other good places in the city centre, but not so close to the Victoria Market. The Greenhouse, Melbourne Connection and Friendly Backpacker are all good.

i stayed the friendly backpacker hostel for 6 night. It's abit noisy at night where you can hear door banging. There is no heater in the room, cold at night, need 2 blanket.

I was in New Zealand for the last five weeks so I haven't been able to respond to the forums while I was away. I was reseaching the BUG New Zealand guidebook (available in bookshops in January ).

I stayed at Hotel Bakpak and hated it! Far too large and the rooms are so cramped! If you were planning on cooking then forget it, the kitchen is tiny for how ever many people the hostel is meant to accommodate.

STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE!
