Default Is tenting in Australia worthwhile?

Alright so I haven't left yet but i'm planning to spend roughly 6 months to a year traveling the coast, starting in brisbane and working clockwise. I'm trying to figure out if it will be worth the cost and extra weight on my pack for me to buy a tent and a mattress. Are there a lot of campsites around Australia? Is it worthwile to do this or should I just stick to the hostels? Any information in regards to this would be greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of places to camp but it is a lot of hassle and not really that much cheaper than staying in hostels.

I wouldn't worry about a tent unless you are travelling by car.

Australia has a lot of good hostels. A few recommendations are BIG, Wake Up!, Central YHA, Railway Square YHA and Original Backpackers in Sydney; Greenhouse, Friendly, Industry and Urban Central in Melbourne; although it really depends on whether you prefer a big clean place with top facilities or a smaller hostel with more atmosphere.

See the hostel reviews on the BUG Australia site for reviews of Australian hostels: http://www.bug.co.uk/reviews/hostels..._asc/index.htm
