just back home :-( from 12 months in oz. thought it worth making a quick mention of a cool shared house company we discovered. they are called Sleeping with the enemy and are in sydney and cairns. We quickly got sick of hostels and sharing with people in dorms so these guys were a god send. Really cool apartments, only share with 6 or 7 people. free wifi and internet and was heaps cheaper than hostels (i dont get that).I think the website is www.sleepingwiththeenemy.com (if not then add .au to the end I guess)

Year or so ago they were about $100/w Adam and will not have risen all that much I'd expect.
There's a 4 week minimum stay but if you're looking to stay in Sydney a bit and find work, certainly way to go.
Probably pay to see if you can register with them a couple of months before getting there and hope a vacancy comes up.
Meanwhile some of the classier hostels like Wake-up are nudging up towards $40 just for a dorm and I stayed very briefly at Alfred Park - it's in BUG and great value at $25 as is King Street H down in Melbourne at $26.
