Question

Hi me and my mate are coming out to oz at the end of june and we are thinking about the best way to bring cash out with us. We are going to set up a bank account when we get there so should we transfer our main funds into this from England and just bring enough to tide us over untill then?
Also is travellers cheques the way to go and just enough cash to get us there. Anyone with info will be a grate help. We are landing in adelaide so if anyone wants to meet up with to fresh brit lads and wants to show us the ropes get in touch. Cheers

Just bring enough cash to tide you over and transfer the rest of the money from your bank account in the UK. However you may need to bring along a bank statement showing that you have the money in case you are questioned about this by the immigration officials.

What worked for me without any hassle's was my regular bank card. I used it Australia wide. Your Visa card is also useful as long as you pay the balance monthly.Booking on-line requires a credit card.Just turning up at hostel is ok but ease of mind is to simply book the first night ahead of arrival. Find out directions/location. That way if hostel not to your likeing you move out next day.Ask if hostel provides pickup at airport. That is nice after a long flight. When in Oz the phone cards are a good deal for overseas calls. Speak to some roomies to see what card they prefer. Rates are about 1 cent a minuet.

You will need some sort of work visa. If you have a Working Holiday Visa you should be eligible for most jobs; however there may be restrictions on the length of time you can hold each job for and you may be classed as a non-resident for tax purposes which means you end up paying more tax than an Australian resident.
