Question

Flying to Sydney in April and i want to take my mobile with me. I have got it unlocked so i can hopefully just buy a sim card when i get there.
But heres my question. Do the hostels have power points in the rooms that allow you to charge up your phone. A friend told me that none of the hostels he stayed at had power points so his phone was usless.
Is he right? I can see his point that the hostels dont want to recharge everyones phone up.

most hostels ive stayed in provide plug sockets, so long as you have a travel adapter to plug your charger into, you should have no problems whatsoever! HTH

What band does a mobile need to be on to work in australia? tri-band?

How much are SIM card over there approximately?

Also, if I were to buy a pay-as-you-go phone in oz how much would it cost? Nothing fancy, just for making calls and texting.

Cheers

you can get a sim in oz for about AUD$30 and they usually give u like $10 worth of free credit or so. texts are like 30c or so to anywhere in the world. usually is cheaper if youre on a plan though..dunno about the band or call charges. sorry dude.

Most Australian phones run on the GSM 900 band although some networks also have some base stations on the GSM 1800 band. Virtually any dual-band or tri-band phone from the UK should be compatible with the GSM 900 and 1800 bands.

In Australia you can buy a SIM card for around $30 although recently I have seen Vodafone SIM cards selling for as little as $2.

Most hostels will have power points to recharge your phone, although the power points aren't always in the most secure locations so you will probably want to hang around in your room for an hour or so while your phone recharges.
