Default Length of stay

Hi, does anyone have any recommendations of how long to spend traveling from Adelaide to Sydney along the coast? I'm going to Oz for 4 months in total, the first 3 weeks is Sydney to Brisbane with Greyhound, after that i'm on my own and planning on taking the oz experience. After all i've heard about it i still think its gonna be the safest option whilst on my own. The last 3 weeks i'm spending on the West coast going from Broome to Sydney. So i'm not sure how long to stay in the other places (from brisbane up the coast, then down the middle then to adelaide). I know it will all change when i'm there but i was planning on going along the south for around a month. But an australian girl i work with (i'm from the uk) says thats too long as there's not much there. Would it be better for me to spend longer traveling up the east coast to cairns, as buy the time i'm in adelaide it will be july so cooler.
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks

What you might consider for your OZ trip is following. Your Sydney to Brissie then up to Cairns and Kuranda rain forest. Most memorable. Then over to Darwin. Most recommended is you purchase Great southern railpass for $500 OZ and from Darwin after you have visited Kakadu and/or Litchfield (not available with the pass) go by train down to Alice Springs. You can take a side tour to Ayers Rock if you have $300 for the bush trip from Alice to the rock and back to Alice. You spend time in the bush. Great time i might add. Then down by train to Adelaide. Then by train over to Melbourne and take in the coast road scenic tour. Then back to Melbourne and go by the rail pass to Perth. A wonderful city. OH by the way. In Melbourne be sure to visit Caot. Cooks cottage. Free. Cottage brought over from England. Then ffrom Perth go to Broome. While in Alice see if you can go to Coober Pedy and sleep in the underground hostel. Join backpackers for ID card to get discounts. Rail pass is unlimited travel throughout Australia for overseas back packers. Sleep on the train on the journey. Red Kangaroo class. Lounge seats.Hostels run about $20 a night with 4 or more to a room. Bedding is bunk bed format. I have done it twice. No hassles. But i am male. If female you can buddy up when you get to hostels with no problems. Even get lifts from fellow hostelers. If you want to go to Darwin by the rail pass you have to go down to Sydney From Cairns then from Sydney the pass is valid to Darwin and other cities. You get pass in Central station in Sydney.Need passport and backpacker id. Not valid for Aus. citizens though.
