Question Do I have to have $5000 to enter australia?

Ok, so I have been reading some stuff on the internet and every now and then I see this thing about having to show a bank statement that says I have access to AU$5000 to get in. Is this true? If not, what is that all about?
I am planning to stay anywhere from a couple months to a year and I will be working while i'm down there.
Any help is greatly appreciated

You have to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself. Will you have a work visa? Where are you from?

Yes, I will have a one year work visa and I am from Canada. What would sufficient funds to support myself mean?

You will need a return or onward ticket and you may be asked to show that you have access to AUD $5000. Usually showing a bank statement is sufficent. Many travellers get a friend or relative to transfer money into their account, get the bank statement and then return the money.

The reason for this is that the Working Holiday Visa is intended for travellers who may want to work from time to time to make extra money on their trip, but it is not intended for people who come to work the entire duration of the visa. Because of this the Australian government ask that you have money to pay for travel around the country. Another reason is that the government doesn't want you to run out of money and apply for welfare or charity handouts so they ask that you have enough money to travel around a bit and settle in before finding work.

It may also be necessary to be interviewed and you may be asked to show evidence of a return ticket or sufficient funds for a return or onward airfare plus evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself during the initial stage of your time in Australia. Generally you are expected to provide bank statements showing that you have access to at least $5000.
