Cool Travelling around the states via train???

I and three friends (Aussies) are looking to travel the states next august/September for between 4-6 weeks. Looking to cover from the east coast, starting at New York, working around the coast to Miami etc, finishing up at Los Angeles or Las Vegas…

Looking at the rail network and the fares for non us residents, Its looks like the best option to do the trip. Has anyone used the train service before or can recommend using it to travel around the states? If not, can recommended any other travel options to such a trip

Many thanks...

I've gone around the country 4 times now, 3 by car, and one by greyhound. The thing with greyhound is, its probably cheaper, but I don't recommend for many reasons. The stations are not always in the best parts of the city. Many homeless people and weird people and 'just got out of jail today' people seem to be everywhere. Its kind of scary. As far as trains, I never knew that was an option, and I live in this country. I guess I assumed it would be too much money. You could try and hitch ride from stangers from certain websites that are reliable. If you need help deciding on what cities to go to and to avoid, let me know. I've partied plenty with aussies last year especially in california and seattle.

The train is a good way to get around the northeast, but for the rest of the country the car is the best way to get around.

I would recommend getting the northeast or an eastern rail pass, then either fly or preferably get an autodriveaway to the west coast. But don't try and travel the whole country by train, once you get away from the northeast distances are much longer and train services less frequent.

I live near NYC and Boston- let me know if I can assist you. It is a long way east coast to west coast(2400 miles!) so I definately recomend a flight. Have you considered buying a car when you get here(you could probably pick something reliable up for $1000), pooling money for gas and driving around? There are some beautiful drives in this country-the Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, Highway 89 in Arizona and Utah, Kangamangus Highway in New Hampshire, Highway 240 thru the Badlands, etc. Amazing scenery and its free(well besides the gas). We are the land of cheap gas, bottomless cup of coffee and have a good day! Driving around is a great way to see the country. Any questions let me know(I dont always check this forum). Cheers and I hope you enjoy your trip to America!

Default Travelling around the states via train????

Hi,
In my opinion, Travel with train is my dream. Travel is my hobby and travel with train is my dream. So as my information train is best way go anywhere if the service available. I also recommend getting the northeast or eastern rail pass, but don't travel whole country by using the train.
