Default tourist visa applications

hi there i'm hoping to go to the states to walk the appalachian trail, so need to apply for a longer-than-90-days VISA.

two problems - proof of sufficient funding and proof of reason for return

1.

I intend to live pretty simply and won't be paying rent but presumably the specified living funds are quite high?

Does anybody know how much money I need to prove I have? how can I find out what is expected?

If I borrow a lump sum from my parents can I then just print off a bank statement to show I have that money?

or would a letter from my parents committing to a regular monthly stipend be better?

and 2.

I've just graduated from Art College and obviously have no mortgage agreements or letters of employment or anything. Will the addresses of my Family resident in the UK suffice? Or details of an MA course I intend to return for (I can't apply and get a place in time for the interview, and intend to be away for longer than I can delay entry anyway)?

Any one know anything?

cheers J
