Default Re-entering USA on visa-waiver

Can anybody please help and advise?.....

I want to travel around america for approx 5 months, maybe longer and do not have enough time to apply for a visitors visa (leaving end of May).

If I come back to England for a week before the 90 days expires will I get a new 90 day stamp when I re-enter the states? If so, does anyone know if the immigration people give you a hard time with this?

Is there a better (quicker & cheaper) way to do this, for example a trip to Canada?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks, Ecray

If you come back to the United Kingdom before 90 days expires, then you'll have another 90 days, and you can freely go back to the united states.

Unfortunately that's completely wrong. You're allowed 90 days out of every 180, so if you go home on your 89th day you have to stay out of the US for 3 months before re-entering.
