Default Doing work in US without visa, but not for an employer?

Is it possible to go to US as a tourist for up to 90 days but work on your own projects while you are there?
Ie, if I am a freelancer doing a project for a UK company am I allowed to go to US on a holiday but still work on the project on my laptop???
Or if not, am I allowed to work on my own research project which isnt directly for any employer but could still be considered as work?

Thanks
