Default Getting from Beijing to Tokyo

Hi

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip for this February through April. We're gonna start in Singapore and end up in Tokyo before flying back home to Canada. Our biggest problem right now is finding out how to get from Beijing to Japan. Preferably Tokyo, but will settle for cheaper.

I've been told to try China's National airlines, but their websites are possibly the worst I have ever experienced, especially when it comes to finding a fare. Japanese websites are no better. All I can find via other websites, are fares that are much more expensive that we're looking for.

Well, I've found somewhat cheap for Osaka. But is there any way to get from Beijing to Japan that minizes the flying? Trains, ferries, whatever?

Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi,

I am on a world tour from may this year that will be heading through the areas you plan to visit. I am entering China frm Lhasa on the Qinghai train and using Beijing as a base to do a return to Mongolia and a return to Japan before heading south from Beijing to finish China at possibly Hong Kong. I might go from Beijing to Japan via korea (obviously cannot overland through north and south korea) there are ferries I gather but it depends on the amount of time you have. My own preferred airline checking sites are www.kayak.com and www.ebookers.com and flights aren't horrendous. The main problem I am having with Japan is keeping the cost down. Lots of really nice experiences to be had but what a price!

Would be interested in your replies as we both probably want the same thing.

As an aside, I was told a really interesting thing recently by the Chinese visa agency in the UK. When I get my visa for Tibet at the PRC embassy in Nepal/Kathmandu. This can only last for 30days or if I beg, for 2 months. I can extend this for longer when I get to Beijing by going to a local police station to do it. Do you anyone wlse out there have any experience of this and any potential communication issues? The laugh is that I did a bit of an internet trawl after hearing this and the first article I read was about the amount of corrupt chinese police stations there were that had been closed down, many in Beijing. How true is this?

Cheers
Jeff

looks like i'm a year or so late for the guy asking the question but check out this site for all the info you'd ever need no trains all over the world...

http://www.seat61.com/Trans-Siberian.htm

actually that link shows you how to get from london to japan (via china) but it includes all the info you need (or tells you where to get the info at least)

hope that helps a little (perhaps to others?!)
