I used to live near the northern coast of Japan. It is such a beautiful country. If you are up north and want to venture away from the "touristy" atmosphere, try some place like Lake Towada. This lake has formed at the top of what used to be an active volcano. The ride up to the top is amazing.
The Japanese are extremely welcoming as well as helpful. Don't be surprised if they stop you and request a picture of you. While a friend and I were taking pictures over a "look out" a bus stopped and about 6 locals asked to photograph "me".
The food in Japan is delicious, just pay close attention to what you eat. I haven't eaten beef since living there almost 7 years ago.
