I came to volunteer in Thailand last year through an organization that I found and paid, over the Internet. As a young women traveling alone, I thought there would be some support system to help me get accustomed to my new surroundings and adapt to a totally foreign culture. The truth was that I was put on a train with minimal directions to my placement and forgotten once I was out of sight. There was not one other person who spoke English in the town where I was sent.
This frustrates me, because I know how many people want to get out and experience the world while doing something for good for other people. That is why I am working with a friend who started up his own volunteer organization in Thailand. Its community based, which means you will not be sent hundreds of km's away, and there will always be staff ready to help you with any difficulties you may have. We have schools in the area that truly need English speaking teachers and have no resources to pay for them.
