Default UK ancestry visa/work permit

Hi there,

Was hoping to get some help or advice... i'm an Aussie and my work is arranging a transfer for me to London (yay!) and they are arranging a work permit for me.
I am wondering whether I can still apply for an Ancestry visa (yes, i'm eligible) once they've arranged the work permit. So, does the work permit prevent or interfere with my ancestry visa application?
Reason being that i'm scared i'll hate the job, and want to leave the job but not London. And then it will be a pain to get another company to sponsor me and go through all that again. But if i'm on an ancestry visa, I don't necesserily need a work permit and can apply for other jobs, so more freedom etc... making sense?

Anyway any help would be a huge help! thanks in advance for any help. cheers.

My guess is that your work permit won't interfer with the ancestry visa, but this is something that only an immigration lawyer would be qualified to advise you on. In many cases you may need to leave the country to apply for the visa, so it would be easier to just sort out the right visa before you leave home.

I would talk to your employer about letting you get the ancestry visa - it will save them paperwork and you have a more flexible visa that will let you stay in the UK.
