I am an aussie, who has been in the uk on a student visa.

my student visa runs out on 30 nov 07. I'm planning on going to venice, italy, then back to the uk for 3 months as a tourist.

Does anyone know if I will need to get a visa, or will I be allowed in at the port of entry as tourist/visitor?

Are there any possible problems with this plan?

You should not have problems. Tourist visa can be granted on arrival but make sure you have ticket to leave the UK at some point or a very good excuse for not having it.
