But I'm afraid that these tour guides just show typical touristic lanscapes and do not show the indigenous places with traditional food, beautiful landscape... My Trip in Morocco :
Hi, I love to travel. It makes me alive so I have been to many countries and many places. Recently, I just came back from my trip to Morocco and I absolutely love it. I have stayed few days in Marrakech, which was absolutely beautiful. The famous square of Djema El Fna coming alive at night. The streets full of souks leading from Djema El Fna square. The stunning Kotuibia mosque, the gardens, people.
The reason I am writting this report is because of our trip that we took to the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi into the Sahara desert. We have booked our trip with a Sahara-Magic.Com 3days/4 nights and absolutely love it. Our guide and driver Hassan was fantastic. He made us welcome and was so happy all the time. He was not only our driver but he became our friend. He was always there for us to make sure that we are having a good time and we are well off taken care.
Visiting the sand dunes is so beautiful! Claiming one of the dunes and sitting there atop and watching the sun goes down is stunning. You see the different colors of the sand changing. Than the night sets in and the sky is full (I mean really full) of stars. You have the local Berbers sitting with us around the fire and singing and playing their drums. It was such a romantic night out. I want to warn you that riding the camels is not that easy. After couple hours you do feel tired and prefer to walk. But it is good to try it. Also driving through the sand dunes is so much fun. Just make sure you are with the right guide, it is so easy to get lost.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Sahara Magic Tours and Hassan, our driver, for the fantastic trip. It was one of the best trip I took. Thank you, Chukran (as Hassan taught us in Arabic). We hope too back agian in moroccco sahara..

Western Africa - general thoughts?

Hey,

I have a vague idea of travel to and around Western Africa. I would be entering Africa at the north of Morocco or north of Tunisia and intend to head south, across the sahara, and venture within the grouping of countries around the gulf of guinea.

This may seem unfeasible, perhaps it is, but at this stage i am looking for general feedback on this proposal. Places to avoid, places to see, tips for traveling in the region.

I have travelled in Pakistan and Iran (with a group), for example, and solo in Papua New Guinea and Indonesian Papua, for example. I have stayed in right shit holes (although would of course prefer not to!), am physically very able (so suggestions of trekking etc would be welcome), and have scrimped by on very little.

Any help is greatly appreciated, especially before i pick up a lonely planet and everything becomes rose tinted!

Morocco: beyond the tourist experience

I'm happy to tell you about my recent trip to Morocco.
We travel as a group of 6 (2 families with teenage children), always the six of us, and every year we go to a different place. Money permitting, we love to travel, but we tend to stay away from organized tours in the usual sense of the word since so often they tend to protect from really getting into the places, skipping from one tourist attraction to the next. This year we decided to go to Morocco, mainly because it seemed inexpensive, but after the vacation we were definitely in love with the place. We flew into Marrakech and were impressed immediately upon arrival by the airport building: its incredible roof outside is like lace and the sun shines through it, casting beautiful shadows on the pavement: there already was an incredible atmosphere greeting us.
We took a taxi for 6 (a minivan) and for 15 euros were taken to Marrakech, with hundreds of scooters speeding around us! Our hotel was right off the Jeema el-Fna - an orderly chaos of smells, colors and sounds, by day and into the night! We hadn't yet learned to not fall for taking pictures of guys with cobras (after you do they demand money), but that is how it started! We spent 2 days in Marrakech visiting the traditional tourist destinations (the souk, the Saadian toumbs, the Majorelle Gardens, the Tower of Hassan II and so forth) before we were met by our travel guides (nomadexperience .com) that we had selected for the real tour: Nourdine El Jakani of nomadexperience (he speaks 5 languages, and is half Tuareg, half Berber) and Hassan (he absolutely doesn't speak any foreign language but drives fine!).
From the outset, we found Nourdine an incredible person, full of joy, outgoing, but never intrusive. We left for Ouarzazate where we visited the Kasbah Ait Benhaddou (a lot of movies were made there) and then off to the Todra Gorges. Here we stayed in a hotel built in the caves! How wonderful! If you want I can give you its name. The next legs of our trip were the classic ones: Erfoud, Merzouga, Rissani, Zagora and Ouarzazate: you can do them with any tour operator, but what we experienced is unforgettable. At Erfoud we had lunch at home with Nourdine's family: What a welcome! We ate couscous the way they make it and drank REAL mint tea, his sister's friends were doing henna tattoos, and did it to us, too. The next evening we headed for a desert oasis on camels, to spend the night in a berber tent distinctly counting every star in the Milky Way (well, almost all).
How can we forget, while at his family's home, how Roger 'vomited' from having drunk milk in his morning coffee?!?!? But that mishap actually led to an interesting experience! Nourdine's mother massaged special points of Roger's wrists and feet with 'magic' oil, and incredibly, somehow, after a quarter of an hour, Roger was good as new. And how can we forget our stop on the way to Zagora, stopping to take a picture, when suddenly 2 children leaped out from nowhere offering a pony made of mud, they had made with their hands, in exchange for some candy! And when they accompanied us through the tiny dark inner passageways of a small town in the south, revealing the meaning of poverty, enabling us to quietly and respectfully peek into the everyday life of people in southern Morocco.
And how can we forget our lunch, eating Berber pizza, in a small rug factory, sitting in the midst of all those dancing colors and so many types of fabric!
I could go on for hours recounting the feelings, more than the places we visited. Thanks to Nourdine (organizing everything down to details like cool drinking water, snacks, SD cards for my camera and making us always feel safe in places that are so strange to us in culture and language) and to Hassan, who, though silent and not speaking our language and understanding little, was an incredible and fun traveling companion. Feelings, understanding the land and the people of the country we are visiting are what we seek when we travel and that is definitely what we got this time. And our children thank us for it, too.

Lake of Stars nominated in UK Festival Awards

The festival has already received fantastic support in the UK press, with The Sunday Times recognising vinspired Lake of Stars as the number 1 winter sun music festival, while according to Metro “there isn’t another festival like it on the planet.”

Seeing JoBurg with Traces of Africa??

Hi!
This is my very first post! I am planning to travel through several parts of southern Africa in about a month. The last day I am coming through Johannesbirg and intentionally planned a long layover so that I could take several hours to see some of the area.

I've been told it's best not to travel through JoBurg alone, particularly since I am female. My flight arrives just after 3pm and then I'll have to go though customs and get my backpack before meeting a guide. I need to be back at the airport in time to check-in for a 12:45 am flight.

I would join a a group, but the latest they all seem to leave too early-- at 3 or 3:30. One tour operator said that they could give me a solo tour that included dinner for 875 Rand.

Has anyone heard of Traces of Africa? They have a webiste tracesofafrica but being a first time poster I cannot list the url, so if you put tracesofafrica into Google, you'll see it--it ends with co.za
