I´ve just stay in a excellent hostel in BA downtown, Estacion Sur Hostel is called and I have to say that it was very relaxing to stay in a place where you don´t have to worry about noise, dirt or thefts. Unique old house completly new and spacious.
They belong to a new hostel network and I have traveled with 10 % off throughout south america thanks to them!
More information at hostelestacionsur com

After BA went to Cordoba staying at Le Grand Hostel of the same network ( by the way you can register for free to get your card at holahostels com ) Very cool place with friendly people and good atmosphere.

Then went north to Salta (staying in La Salamanca Hostel) and Jujuy where I saw the most incredible landscapes and is really cheap around there, , you can eat til you die for 15 pesos..

Next stop Bolivia and Chile but for next post guys!

Cheers!

Also, does anyone have a sense of what a reasonable deal would be for these hotels given that Feb. is high season? (We're flying from Toronto.) We saw a package listed for the Royal Hideaway for $1500 pp (CDN) - which surprised us cause it was lower than what Air Transat is currently asking for the Melia. Is this a good price for high season? Better to wait a bit and book in the fall? Wish we could just hop on a plane right now - some great sales on at the moment.]]>

I lived there for a year working but didn't get enough time to explore as much as I wanted to.

Its a beautiful place (and generally undiscovered by gringos). In a day you can drive from the volcanos to the beach and through tons of fun cultural spots and small villages along the way.

HIGHLY recommended.]]>

Just a short post to warn anybody else thinking of staying at the Posada Los Mapaches in Tulum.

Although it looks perfect from the website, it is actually located next to the main north-south highway (4 lane) so at night it gets a lot of noise from passing trucks and buses. The owner is not very sympathetic about this and given that the hostel is not particulary cheap or with great facilities (no public kitchen or tv for example) then I am sure that it is possible to find quieter, better places nearer the centre. It is about 1.5km from the centre as well. I certainly regretted staying there.

So if you want a good nights sleep then choose carefully!!!]]>

We are looking for students, interns and/or entrepreneurs who would like to try their hand at managing, or just simply helping out with our campground/hostel. We are trying to grow organic food and would love suggestions, ideas and thoughts. Oh, did I mention that we are in one of the most beautiful places in the world, a USA territory, St. John - it is filled with tons of beaches and places to just enjoy nature.

Check us out at botanicalvillas.com.

Legendary Hostel-Green Tortoise San Francisco http://www.bug.co.uk/forums/discussion/5071/legendary-hostel-green-tortoise-san-francisco Thu, 18 Dec 2008 02:17:13 -0500 mojito13 5071@/forums/discussions

As far as best hostels in the US, this is certainly it. If you ever mention you've stayed at a hostel in San Francisco, old-timers will know it was the Green Tortoise. Everyone I met there had heard about it by other entusiastic former guests, and for a good reason. The accommidations are fantastic-free meals, free internet and wireless, free sauna and pool table, even free beer on Tuesdays. Most might fondly remember their participation in what is now the Beer Olympics, stemming from their famous beer pong nights. But what most people remember is the overall vibe, friendly, open, warm and accommodating.

The Green Tortoise Adventure Travel company was started first in the 70's, and provides a unique travel expeirence that has often been likened to a hostel on wheels--just imagine a hostel that passes through some of the most beautiful national parks and scenery in the U.S. and Mexico! I went on the Western Roadrunner trip and it was seriously one of the most unique expeirences of my life. A few nights at the hostel after was very welcome though. They even let my friends from the trip who were not staying there take a shower and rest for a little when we got back to San Francisco.

I have traveled a lot through the US and the Americas, and this really is one of the best hostels I have been to, if not the best. I just would like any SF-bound backpackers to know you really have no better choice than this legendary hostel.]]>

I was just wondering if some of you more travelled people maybe able to give me some info on hostels in San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago and thank you to the person who wrote on her stay at the Big Apple in NY. Which are the cleanest and safest?

I am 58 yrs old (a with-it nannie) and wondered about travel between Amtrak Station and the hostels (do they come pick you up like here in Australia?).

I would also like to know about the possibility of bedbugs...is there any insect repellent that you can use so they stay away??? Not really familiar with them but know they have a high occurance of them on the dive boats here out of Cairns Qld.

Many thanks guys and look forward to your answers to my many questions.

Cheers Marg :)]]>

Does anyone know if there are any hostels in the following cities:

- Baltimore
- Memphis
- Milwaukee*
- Pittsburgh*

* Milwaukee and Pittsburgh used to have hostels, but they closed recently.

Also there are a couple of cities that are poorly served by hostels:

- Dallas (just one small hostel in the suburbs)
- Detroit (just one hostel across the border in Windsor, Ontario)

If anyone is aware of any hostels in these cities, can you please let me know about them. To qualify as a hostel it must offer shared dormitory-style accommodation.]]>
