By removing the air, every bit of available
space is used efficiently. Most people struggle when packing for a
vacation with getting everything they need or want into the luggage that
they have. Using Space Bags when traveling can have an amazing effect
on how much you can fit into your suitcase.

    • 1 Plan which items you will put into the Space Bag. Fold them
as neatly as possible to keep the bag organized. You may want to have
multiple bags for different items, as you will most likely be able to
get two layers of Space Bags in a single suitcase.

2 Pack each Space Bag with all the items you can until it is
full according to manufacturer's directions or everything you need is
inside.3 Set up the vacuum for hose operation. Expect to disconnect
the hose from its normal housing so that it can be used to vacuum
      directly from the Space Bag.

4 Place the vacuum hose onto the round circular opening on the
side of the Space Bag. Turn the vacuum on and hold it over the hole,
allowing it to suck the air out of the bag. Continue until all of the
air has been pulled out. The bag will now be almost flat, and you will
be surprised how small the packed-out bag has become.

5 Place the shrunken Space Bag into the suitcase. Repeat the
process for multiple bags if desired. Arrange the bags in the suitcase
to maximize space for other items Connecticut Web Design.

The car absolutely positively has to have a manual transmission. There is no way I am driving an automatic.

It has to be a small car. They are cheaper to run, easier to park and more fun to drive. However what most US car rental companies call a compact is what I would call a medium to large car.

Why can't I just get a nice manual Renault Twingo? I would even go for something as big as a Clio.

As an alternative I may buy a car and sell it when I have finished. Do many US used car dealers sell cars to travellers with a guarranteed buy back price?]]>

Buying / Hiring an RV http://www.bug.co.uk/forums/discussion/4609/buying-hiring-an-rv Thu, 15 Nov 2007 20:08:12 -0500 Karl & Fran 4609@/forums/discussions
We are looking into the possibility of either buying or hiring an RV to travel around in and save on accomodation costs.

Has anyone got any imformation or tips on what would be the best way of doing this?

Is it realistic to think that you could buy an RV on the east coast, drive it accross America and sell on the west coast?

Would we have any problems with registration / insurance?

If anyone has done this before and has tips / experience it would be grately appreciated!

Thanks,

I'm a Brit planning to traverse North America in the next few months. I'll be flying into Seattle at the beginning of August and with a little luck flying home a couple of months later from New York. I've been reading everything I can, but there's no substitute for some frank advice if I can get it.

My route is windy. Ideally I would like to hit San Francisco first, then head right across country along an approximation of US Route 50, diving up into Canada briefly before arriving at the big apple. As near as I can work out that's going to fall not far short of five thousand miles. Being British, the sheer scale of America is difficult for me to quite get to grips with, but I figure that would take maybe two weeks of pretty serious driving. Allowing for enough time out of the car for the thing to be worthwhile, does two months sound like an achievable period to do it in?

My biggest concern is the business of organising a vehicle and getting it all legal. Being twenty-two, hiring a car for that long would be expensive on a scale best described as "horrific". I would also much rather pick my own vehicle - I can take the reliability and comfort hit. I've seen the buying a car plan heavily discouraged on this forum, but frankly I can't see another way, so I suppose my question is whether it is even possible. Not living in the country, it's difficult to get a feel for how much of the bureaucracy is deathly serious and how much of it is relatively circumventable. Not to mention the differing regulations from state to state. So...

Licenses. I have a full British license, and will acquire an International Driving Permit before leaving the UK. I am hoping that will be sufficient as far as the US authorities are concerned...?

Buying the car. I can't see finding one being any more trouble than it would be over here, but I don't fully understand the registration processes one has to go through after picking it up. Is this going to be a hell of a stumbling block? Do I really need a permanent address, or will the address of a friend or hostel do the job? It surprises me that there doesn't seem to be any provision for foreign drivers wanting to do this. Assuming this actually can be done, can anyone estimate the timeframe?

Insurance. Should be possible but pricey, right? As a young driver I already pay extortionate car insurance over here, so I can deal with that.

Well, if anyone can shed any light on any of that I'd be exceptionally grateful. Useful links are always appreciated too. Thanks for reading!]]>
Central Canada Tour with "Toban Experience" http://www.bug.co.uk/forums/discussion/5363/central-canada-tour-with-toban-experience Tue, 09 Jun 2009 21:12:18 -0400 aika3011 5363@/forums/discussions
I am from Germany and I passed an internship in Winnipeg/Manitoba/Canada in summer. My dream was it to go to Canada, collect work experience, learn the language and see the nature of Canada. But the last point was very difficult because I had no car in Canada. So my boyfriend visited me and we participated in a tour with the Toban Experience. That`s a tour with seven stops through parts of the province of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. You can decide by yourself which stops you want to see and how long you want to stay there. I chose the three stop tour and started my tour in Winnipeg. I visited Kenora, Minaki and Grand Beach. In Kenora we booked a kayak trip and we visited 'Husky the Musky' and very nice fun bars there. In Minaki we were rock climbing and in Grand Beach we were enjoying the sun and this big lake. This tour operator offers special conditions in hostels, b&b’s etc. So we could stay overnight for 35 dollar. It was an amazing experience and I will visit other parts of Canada, too now. Can someone recommend me another nice tour?;)

Greetings
Aika:p]]>

A Guide to Moving your Pets http://www.bug.co.uk/forums/discussion/4717/a-guide-to-moving-your-pets Fri, 15 Feb 2008 11:29:58 -0500 mike_savry 4717@/forums/discussions A Guide to Taking your Pets when Moving

Moving is an exciting and busy time. You can get so busy preparing, packing, scheduling, etc. that you might forget about the other "members" of your family - your pets. Planning to take pets with you when moving? Start preparing now with the quick guide below.

Pets in the Car

For dogs, cats and other pets who like to roam around, moving will be a great task. Why? These types of pets become very closely-knit with their home and environment. Going away from their home can be devastating. If you're moving a short distance from where you live currently, it's best if you can take your pets in the car with you. They'll feel much safer being with you than on a lonely, strange delivery truck. Dogs usually adjust to car rides better than cats. If your pet is not accustomed to car rides, try taking it on a ride several times before the move so it will become familiar with riding.

If your pet is a bird, goldfish, hamster or other caged animal, make sure the container used for transport is comfortable and secure.

Foreign Travel for Pets

If taking your pet to another country, you need to prepare in advance for your pet just as you will for yourself. Some countries will require a "pet passport" and other documentation. Apply early to get your pet approved, and make sure your type of pet is allowed in that particular country and the neighborhood where you will be living.

Pets in the Air

Plan a flight with your pet far in advance. Many airlines will have certain requirements for taking pets along, so you can contact them early on to learn what you should do. You'll likely have to put your pet in a secure airport-approved carrier and take it on the plane with you in the plane's designated animal area. This can be a traumatic time for your pet, being separated from you for the entire flight, so you will need to give it extra special care when you arrive. Don't feed your pet too close to your flight time - it might get sick. Also, mark the pet's container anywhere you can with the words "Live Animal" so people handling the container will be extra careful.

Pet Containers

There are many types of pet containers available on the market that are great for travel. Make sure the container is large enough for comfort, but not so large that your pet will be tossed around. Your pet should be able to stand up, lie down or turn around. Check the container for adequate ventilation, and make sure there are no areas where leakage might occur when the pet "goes." Put something absorbent in the bottom as well.

If you're uncertain about the best travel container for your pet, ask your veterinarian for suggestions. Also, ask about medications to help your pet on the trip, any vaccinations that might be needed before traveling to another country, etc. When traveling to some countries, you might need proof of vaccination from your vet.

Taking Care of your Pet during the Move

If you have a cat or dog, put them in a separate room with food, water and a toy during the loading process. The movers and all the commotion can make any pet nervous, and might send your pet into hiding if you don't keep it in a room with the door closed. Keep checking on your pet in the room to let them know you're still around.

Arriving at the New Home with your Pet

Arriving at your new home will be strange to your pet, so you should be very cautious. Have a leash ready so the pet doesn't attempt to run away. Keep your pet indoors for a few days until it becomes familiar with the home. Then, take it outdoors on a leash each day and let it explore the yard. Put the food and water dish outside so the pet will realize that this is their new home - and yours.

Have an I.D. tag made for the animal's collar with the new address and phone number in case it tries to run away. Also, have all the animal's familiar items around such as bedding, toys, bowls, etc.

No matter what type of pet you have, take special time out of your busy moving schedule to show your pet love and attention. This will make moving much easier for you and your pet.
