I've booked a trip to Australia this summer and and doing the East coast over three months. I'm not leaving until June, but I'm trying to do as much research and forward planning as I can to help it go smoothly, and so I can spend my time seeing the place rather than worrying about places to stay or ending up in a really awful hostel if I can avoid it!

I'm starting in Melbourne and finishing in Cairns, and stopping off on the way at all the main places (Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Fraser Island Gold Coast/Whitsundays etc). So we're basically working our way up stopping off at all the main places.

If any one has ANY advice on hostels to stay in and ones to avoid, places to see or avoid and any general advice or experiences they could share I'd be really grateful!

Many thanks, Jessica.]]>

They operate a range of houses and flats around Manning Street, Milton and advertise mainly on Realestate.com.au and Gumtree.com.au

The adverts usually say Cheap short term accommodation - No Lease / No Bond
ask for Ken on 0411 428 888
or his partner Les (Leslie) 0411 428 776

They cram as many people as possible into these places, and the facilities are basic. You get no privacy as you share your bedroom with many others. You may as well stay in a proper backpackers, with tighter regulations, and for possibly less money - as they advertise a particular price - but will not return a proportion of your deposit which you have to pay ( usually a couple of weeks rent) -as they use this for "cleaning" ?

Cleanliness is an issue - with bed bugs, and rats which have been sited too!

If you complain - you are made to feel like it's your fault. They are not the friendliest couple once you show dissatisfaction.]]>

Just wondering does anyone have any advice/recommendations for cheap accommodation in either Brisbane or Gold Coast? It doesn't have to be a hostel, in fact, a shared house or shared rental apartment would be preferable.

Any help anyone could give would be great,

Hi
I am writing to make you aware that BALMORAL HOUSE, Brisbane is not fit to be called a hostel. My partner and I stayed at this hostel for 2 weeks until we were horrified to find out we had bed bugs after changing the sheets, which by the way we had to ask the cleaner to do in the first place!. I understand that bed bugs are often found in hostels, however the treatment the owner (Sue) gave us was unacceptable.

Firstly, she did not believe us when we told her we had bed bugs, we had to actually catch one to show her before she would take any action. Then she told us she was unable to move us into another room as it was 9pm and she was fully booked, which was a lie as we had friends in the hostel dorms that had vacant spaces. So when we confronted her about it she allowed us to move from our double bug infested room into two separate dorms.

The follow day she told us she was going to fumigate the room. By fumigate, she meant she was going to spray carpet cleaner around the edges of the room and that's it. The day after that she told us we had to move back into our room as it was now clear of all bugs and the dorms where we spent the previous night were booked out (again this turned out to be another lie). As we'd paid for a week upfront we were stuck at the hostel and unable to leave. That night as we lay in bed another bug ran across the pillow. So we caught it and took it down to her as she sleeps on the premises at the weekend. She then said we could move back into the separate dorms that we meant to be fully book!!!

The following day after we'd complained that we'd paid for a double which is more expensive than dorms and we'd had to spend 2 nights in separate dorms, she moved us into another double room, which was half the size of the previous double room and had a terrible smell. We asked for some sort of compensation for the inconvience caused and she said no. We asked for a refund for all the washing we'd had to do, to clean our cloths ($30) at the laundrette which was a mile down the road as the hostel machines were both being used by her and she said no. I had to visit the doctor twice and we both had to get cream which in total cost $50 and the stress of being covered head to toe in itchy bites. We both had to take 2 days off work as we had bites on our faces.

On top of all that, these are a couple of other things we noticed, a member of staff had been altered to the fact that there was a cockroach in the kitchen cupboards so they sprayed insect repellant into the cupboards where all the hostel pans were kept. Shortly after a guest of the hostel went into the cupboard and was going to use the pan without washing it until I told her what had happened. Also, the owner keeps her dog in the hostel at the weekends which I am sure is illegal. The VIP book also advertises that there is a free pick up however when you call up to arrange the pick up she says that the van is in the garage being fixed however this has been the case for the last 6 months according to the long term lodgers. The VIP book also advertises that this hostel has internet access and a job club, both of which are not available.
Finally the whole hostel is completely filthy, the kitchen is dirty, and I mean DIRTY and not just the usual stuff that you expect in hostels. The whole place needed cleaning from top to bottom!

I hope I don't come across as a winging woman, because the only reason I am writing this is so that others do not have to experience, in my opinion the worst hostel in Australia.
Kind Regards
Sarah

Out in the cold at Southern Cross Backpackers Agnes Water http://www.bug.co.uk/forums/discussion/5460/out-in-the-cold-at-southern-cross-backpackers-agnes-water Thu, 06 Aug 2009 05:59:35 -0400 stacey mouse 5460@/forums/discussions This is a good place to stop if you have your own transport, however if you are arriving by bus its a nightmare.
This hostel advertises that it will pick up for free but it does'nt.If your greyhound arrives at an unsocial time for them they will charge you $3 to pick you up.This is ok but if you are travelling on the Premier bus(cheaper option for a budget traveller)they will only pick you up if you pay$15 each!
When you do come to leave the hostel and want dropping back off at the premier stop they will charge you $15 each again and will also only drop you off at a time that co-insides with the Greyhound drop off.
This is all very well however the Greyhound leaves Agnes Water at midnight and the Premier bus leaves at 2.15am! What an unpleasant situation it is to be sat in the middle of nowhere in the cold waiting 2 hours for a bus.
This is the general uncaring attitude of this hostel.
They charge you for absolutely everything they can.The rooms are nice but so basic and are freezing at night. They charge you $10 deposit and a $2 charge for having an extra blanket!
Because the buses go late at night they also will charge you $10 to hang around all day even though you would have no where else to go anyway. And as the coaches in the common area stink of dogs you just have to sit on a hard chair all day.
The staff are really abrupt and rude and if you ask them about any tours or daytrips they will give you no help at all. They generally dont give a toss!DO NOT GO TO SOUTHERN CROSS BACKPACKERS, AGNES WATER.]]>

Budget farm/bush holiday - Ballarat, Victoria http://www.bug.co.uk/forums/discussion/5516/budget-farmbush-holiday-ballarat-victoria Wed, 09 Sep 2009 05:22:49 -0400 Dreamrise 5516@/forums/discussions
Are you looking for somewhere cheap to enjoy Australia off the traditional tourist track?

I have a small farm near Ballarat (just over an hour from Melbourne). We can pick up from Ballarat train station for a small additional fee, or free from Buninyong Vline bus stop.

The farm backs onto bushland. There are lots of great bush walks in the area and we can advise of other local attractions and possibly provide lifts etc. We normally arrange to have a campfire one night for guests staying a week or longer and provide a free BBQ tea, show you how to cook damper on the campfire and have a sing-a-long.

We have kangaroos in the horse paddocks most mornings and afternoons and a range of native birds (rosellas, lorikeets, finches etc) eat from the bird feeder beside the bungalow verandah throughout the day.

I have a small bungalow on my farm set up for holiday rental. It consists of 2 rooms. Room 1 is furnished with a double bed and wardrobe (all bedding provided). Room 2 is furnished with a foam couch which folds out to form another bed (suitable for 1 adult or 2 children), a table with 2 chairs (2 more available if required), TV & DVD player on unit on wheels (so can be put in bedroom if desired), Kitchenette consisting of fridge, microwave, benchtop stove, hotplate, toaster, jug and all crockery, cultery, cooking utensils etc.

Share bathroom facilites of the main farmhouse located approx 8 metres away.

We have dogs, free range chooks and several horses/ponies. We currently have a miniature pony who is due to have a foal during the September school holidays. She is very friendly and loves cuddles.

Rates $100 for 2 night weekend for 2 people ($10 per extra person per night). $120 for 3 nights midweek or $210 for 1 week (works out to be $15 per person per night). Includes breakfast. Maximum occupancy 3 adults or up to 4 people.
