The rate was only $26.50 per night plus tax and they provided all the bedding. They are right on this beautiful Blue Lagoon, and in KapaaTown w/ all you need for youre stay. Walk to restaurrants, big marrkets, live music, and to beaches for surfing and swimming. They have free wifi. They also have private rooms and dorm,

The place was very clean with a friendly staff and only 15 minutes to the airport. We went to the far reaches of the island and spent the whole day and we were still back at the Kauai BeacHHouse in time for dinner.

The place is just awesome, you get the feeling you are in a bif tree house with huge decks all over. Soft music is piped into the relaxing areas and there is a TV in the entertainment buildiing by the road.

We'll be going back the very next chance we get. We highly rercommend the Hauai BeacHHouse as the palce to stay on Kauai.

Can anyone help me out on some advice on Hawaii and Fiji??

I'm a lady traveller on my own and have decided to stop off at Hawaii and Fiji in January/Feb whilst on my way to see friends in NZ.

I will be stopping in Hawaii for about 4 nights and Fiji for about 7 nights.

Firstly which islands in Fiji and Hawaii are the best to see in such a short period of time?

Does anyone have any advice on where to stay (hostels or any other budget accomodation!) or what to avoid and what are "must see" things (seeing as i wont be there for very long i want to maximise my time)?

I dont really want party style hostels as i'm there just to chill out "big time". I'm looking for somewhere that is clean and safe with helpful staff but that wont cost me a fortune to get to the cool places!

I'm kind of being swamped by advice of what to see and do (but most of it is not for the budget concious traveller!) and I need a concise guide book as there are to many out there- Any advice please would be gratefully received!

Thanks in advance!]]>
AVOID BASE in the north http://www.bug.co.uk/forums/discussion/5642/avoid-base-in-the-north Mon, 09 Nov 2009 11:49:13 -0500 aussieliz 5642@/forums/discussions
This is my pros and cons:

Christchurch
Pros:
right in the heart of Cathedral Square,
lockers,
security,
adequate showers,
good kitchen,
good outdoor eating area
heater and fridge in rooms
got own powerpoint

Cons:
the lift is very old, and the stairs are tight if you have to lug a backpack up there, and others have to wait up the top for you to get up there....
-the doors dont close quietly so you can hear them slamming down the corridor.

Queenstown
Pros:
-very nice looking
-oodles of computers
-very nice staff
-good size dorms
-lockers
-ensuite for each dorm
-fridge in each room
-laundry was good.
-got a small balcony
-one one street back from the lake
-own reading light

Cons:
-ensuites are sooo small that there only enough room to have the loo and sanitary bin...
the showers are the same size but they have a timer and ours went off after 10seconds literally, so you got soo pissed off
-lift is rather scary graphics in it, like of Wolf Creek kinda thing...
-noisy at times

Wellington
pros:
lockers
good working lifts, though a bit slow
-got enough powerpoints

cons:
very small shower!
-very very cramped, 6 beds cramped into a room with only enough room to dump your backpack and nothing more
-in a very old building!
very old weird heater..didnt want to touch that!

taupo:
pros:
only 4 beds in the sanctuary dorm with a proper ensuite and very spacious!
very friendly staff
only one street away from lake
great view of the lake and gardens from kitchen and balcony/bedroom

cons:
no lockers.....
weird heater that i didnt want to touch

rotorua:
pros:
good location,
doesnt smell
big mirror in female dorm
balcony overlooking pool and gardens
the pool is nice, except do NOT jump in, its extremely hot, and i only got my knees wet, and it looked like, after 30mins with my legs in that i got badly sunburnt...thankfully it went down though

cons:
i was in a 12 bed female dorm, with 4 in one kinda room and the rest in one part....i thought me and another girl were it, but then it filled in half an hr with chicks from the magic or kiwi bus....but then i made friends with some of them, and thankfully they were going to the same maori dinner that i went to which was a relief as a single traveller

we had one shower (with a high step to get in and was rather tooo hot!) and one toliet...not good.
no lockers
even older building than wellington
a long walk from the bus stop if you have ur backpack...but its ok.
bed side lights dont all work...

bay of islands
pros:
NONE

cons:
i got in on a late flight and got there at like 9pm, and it looks like a caravan park but with cabins. I was instantly like oh shit this is going to be crap! I got in checked in at the bar and went to the dorm. Which was not quiet, very very cramped, and i couldnt find my bed. I dumped my bag where i could, stormed to the bar and told them there is no bed for me, the lady came back and nearly wanted to throw stuff off some beds that didnt look slept in. She went to the office and gave me a key for a single room for the night. Had a tv so that was nice but with very limited stations. Could still hear the drunken louts all night until 2am. I had to share the bathroom and shower which were shit so i didnt bother wtih a shower....

I rang up at 7.30am another hostel to see if they had a better thing, Captain Bobs, and they said i could come around straight away, since i had to get a 9.30am boat cruise, and got friendly service.
the base manager was like oh well we gave you a double room and didnt bother apologising....

Auckland
well i didnt bother staying in ACB coz the girls in rotorua told me it was absolutely worse than rotorua so i just lost the money and stayed in a hotel...better than stressing on my last few days in the country]]>

While so many travellers avoid the Westport-Charleston area, Beaconstone alone is a good reason to visit. I stayed way beyond my initial booking (I loved how guests' names are written on the chalkboard each night). It is an intimate space, lovingly built with so much consideration given to the natural environment. I believe anyone who experiences several days there is lucky; one night is simply not enough.

Mornings were my favourite; I sat at the long wooden bench tables, absorbing the quiet and 'breath' of the place. It was so serene, I was able to write a complete draft of a children's book there!

Again, let me know when you stayed there and what you enjoyed about it best.

Walk slowly,

Fantastic place on the most beautiful lagoon i have ever stayed at in my life. Read the reviews on tripadvisor.co.uk and see the pictures. We paid £8 each to stay in a twin room-you will get lizards in the house but it is the south pacific so to make up for that you have the most fantastic blue sea you have ever seen. Stay at Varas and you will not be disapointed. www.varas.co.ck

There is a hostel on there called Mereani's & is cheap & friendly in a paradise location. (jerry the manager will treat you like a king). you can spend 10x the money on plantation, castaway or robinson crusoe island, but 5 miles away is Mana & island hoppers from those mentioned were annoyed to find Mana was bigger, friendlier & 10x cheaper.........lol (glad i'm not rich or i would've been pissed off too)

We met loads of travellers island hopping & they all said "why go to anyother island in Fiji, they wont be cheaper or more beautiful or friendlier. so why bother".

Did anyone find better in Fiji?????? if so where & why.
