Best and Worst Hostels
  • KatetKatet July 2007
    Best Hostels:

Jetpak City in Berlin. This place is the best. :p

Oasis Backpacker's Mansion in Lisbon. :p See my review....

    Worst Hostel:

By Far...The Generator in London! What a dump! Rude staff and commercialized generic-ness. This place had no down home friendly traveler vibe what-so-ever.
  • Nah, the Generator's not the worst. I'll agree it's not my style, but I don't go for the big party hostels anyway. There are far worse hostels though. I can name five just off the top of my head in London.
  • KatetKatet July 2007
OK OK...it may not be the worst...I'm sure there are some really bad ones out there. It was the worst one i have stayed at though. I guess I've never really roughed it though...

I would love to see your reviews of Jetpak and the Generator. Which Jetpak was it (there are two) and what is so good about it?

I also found the Generator disappointing and it isn't the sort of place that I would choose to stay at but I can understand that some people would like it. I have to agree with musicdisciple that there is a lot worse out there.

    WORST HOSTELS
Having visited over 1500 hostels my vote for the worst ever hostel would be one of the following:
Backpackers Travellers Hostel (Peterborough, SA, Australia)
    Pink Roadhouse (Oodnadatta, SA, Australia)
Wedgewood House YHA (Picton, South Island, New Zealand)
    The Zone (Newquay, Cornwall, England)
A1 Playfair House Hostel (Edinburgh, Scotland)
    Archview Hostel (Galway, Ireland)

    BEST HOSTELS
    My favourite hostels are:
Hill Top Backpackers (The Catlins, South Island, New Zealand)
Lochmara Lodge (Marlborough Sounds, South Island, New Zealand)

They are both clean and well maintained with a lovely cosy atmosphere but you have to get off the beaten track to find the really best hostels (Lochmara Lodge is a two-hour walk from the nearest road).
  • I think my favourite hostel was in Gryon, Switzerland. I also really liked the Hitchiker's themed one in Berlin just because I'm a bit of a Douglas Adams freak. I loved the backpackers in Halifax, Canada too. It's in a rough neighbourhood but the owners are really friendly and go out of their way to help.

eeh, i stayed in the hitcher's hostel when i was in Berlin!! it was definatly the poshest hostel i stayed in. i loved it there (although there seemed to be quite alot of hookers just areound the corner)

i think the worst hostel(s) i stayed in - purely for lack of atmosphere and amounts of rules - were HI hostels... although they are generally clean and fairly well equiped, we ended up getting in far too much trouble with the staff, getting locked out, or being surrounded by mobs of school children.

i don't think i've ever really stayed in a terrible hostel though

my favourite hostel was the one in Manaroa - village number 2 of Cinque Terre. Cleanest place ever with lockers. Some not so great points: time limit on showers, curfew. But it had a built in restaurant so you could have fantastic pesto pasta and enjoy it on their porch or roof looking at the mediterranean

also good was my recent trip to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where i stayed in a 18 bed hostel in Pleasant Bay

Halifax has at least one other hostel.........it's an HI place right downtown

Yeah, I've stayed in both, but on different trips. I wish the backpackers could be in the same location as the HI.

i also like Jetpak City in Berlin! So far, i haven't experience yet the worst hotel.. They're all great for me..

Many of you will not believe it,but the worst i know of is none other than Honolulu,Hawaii. Guests are made to feel priviledged rather than welcome. Yes! You are also worked or invited to leave. Management gets in your face to let you know it is just about Your money.
Worse? Punish yourself by spending a few days at mgmt's second hostel near the U of Hawaii - Hoooo Boy!
Both put you out during the day and make you leave the area; even if in pouring rain. Trust me and spend for a good 125 a nite hotel or check into a party hostel. Your self respect will thank you for it.

I was really happy with Old Prague Hostel and Prague Square Hostel in Prague. Very clean and safe hostels. Definitely the best located hostels in Prague, still for reasonable price.

brazen backpackers in london is the worst! the facility n the filth matters r obvious, but i'm not the fuzzy. the ppl there r horrible! it's more like a ghetto than a hostel! or some type of hostel for poor ppl... yep many ppl there r just sleepin n claimin' benifits! it's not for backpackers who travel!
and some dodgy ppl can just break in, come thru the pub or the side door when it's 'unlocked'. many dodgy ppl wander around there n come to the brazenhead pub, many of them look obviously abnormal...
heard many things had happened there... a horrible hostel!

The best hostel EVER!(LIKE EVER) was Naughty Squirrel in Riga.
Ofc it does not have a perfect view over Mediterranean cause it is simply impossible over there but staff is the best(welcome shots!OMG!) and there are the best parties and pub crawls. Also the offered "trips" and other entertainment like bungee jumping and bobsleigh and tank(actual tank) riding tours that they offer for really reasonable price.Location - right in downtown and closest bar is well..quite next door.literally.Rooms are clean and internet for free in common room.table foosball as well.

    Best holidays ever!

Worst - I really did not enjoy sunflower hostel in Berlin. Even though it was not too messy, no common activities, sqeeking beds(omg u can not even turn around without waking up everyone in the room!:D) and fairly boring everything.
  • Looking for good quality hostel that's affordable in Zurich, Switzerland. Anyone have any suggestions?
  • The price should be around $75 to $100 per night for a hostel in Zurich.

The worst hostel I stayed at was a tiny place in Wales. I can't remember the name, but I won't go there again :(
  • martincramplemartincrample October 2011
Have to say Circus Hostel in Berlin. There was also an apartment in Prague which was amazing. It was dirt cheap too. God knows what it was called.
  • Lilly123Lilly123 October 2011
I stayed at the Generator in London and I really didn't find it so bad. Definitely not the worst hostel I have stayed at.

One of the better hostels I have stayed at was Raise a Smile Hostel in Berlin - very clean but definitely not a party hostel.

If you decide to visit Ljubljana - Slovenia. I would recommend H2O Hostel Ljubljana . It's location is in the city center from where you can start your discovery of Ljubljana and its hidden spots. However, If you are used to be accommodated in a hostel with a big rooms with 16+ beds, this one is not for you.

    thank you
  • Hostel is place where several people with different religion, caste, creed and sex live together and share their own ideas and act in their own way. Now, this may be good or worse it depends upon the people who are living in it. Mostly we have negative things to observe quick like we have;
Worse Hostel, Pink Roadhouse (Oodnadatta, SA, Australia)
But there are some best one as well like Generator in London in which one can live and enjoy the liberal approach.for better position
  • If you are new in city and want to live for short -time, then it is highly recomended that you meust stay in **** where you will be enable to live free from all hutch- putch and will feel like that you have really selected the right one for your short term residents. Hostels are having either characteristics good and bad but to be safe is better than sorry!
  • Nothing is much important and helpful for you in Vancouver than to live in *** really works for the potential clients and customers.
