While I was living in Australia I got a chance to go to the Blue Mountains and stay in the YHA there. I always recommend the YHA's, though they can be slightly more expensive than other hostels, they're the best. The atmosphere was great and very welcoming. My friend and I visited during Christmas time, and it was a nice place to hangout in. The whole place is pretty well equipped and clean with internet access. We also found it had a good location and was just a short walk to the grocery store, restaurants, pubs and the train station along the main street, not to mention from the Three Sisters. This was very good compared to some hostels I've stayed at in Oz.

An excellent hostel with nice areas to relax and tidy clean rooms. Each bed has it's own reading light and the bathrooms were equally clean. Also a nice bonus was that reception have an acoustic guitar you can borrow.

My only criticisms are that the kitchen closed at 10pm which was annoying, and the coin slot internet machines were a bit temperamental (the staff warn you of this however).

Overall though an excellent hostel, but possibly a touch expensive for non-YHA members.

Excellent hostel with good rooms (we had a twin). Good, well equipped kitchen and rooms and areas to relax in were first rate. Neat outdoor area to sit and relax too with a statue which looks like it could have been been knocked off from Carbisdale Castle in Scotland!! Great Internet facilities. Parking was good, cycle lockup, short walk to the rail station and great shops and very friendly and helpful staff. Bakery is next door one side (great rolls, cakes, croissants etc) and police station the other! This was our second stay there. Christmas 2003.

The Katoomba YHA is a great place to base yourself for a couple of days if you're visiting the Blue Mountains. It's got a great big lounge room with sofas and open fireplace, as well as a separate tv room with a huge television and more sofas! The kitchen is big and well equiped and the rooms and clean and comfortable. The staff are friendly although it somehow still has the YHA less sociable feel about it.

After spending a few days in Sydney, the Katoomba hostel is only a 1.5 hour train ride to Hostel paradise. The main indoor living area is fantastic with comfy couches, heaps of mags and a great TV room. The veranda was a highlight and nothing beat grabbing a slab of beer, a cask of the local red from Liquorland next door , fire up the barbie and watch the sunset with your fellow hostel buddies. The only problem was that you get kicked off the veranda at 10pm as people get quite noisy!

The rooms were a tad stuffy due to smelly socks drying on the heaters and the kitchen was locked for cleaning fairly early. So get out to Katoomba on the train and prepare to stay for a night or two more than you plan!!

The old YHA hostel had more character.

Too much noise late at night as the telephones have been placed next to dorms and all night guests are ringing home to mum.

The outside veranda area is also a source of noise late at night.

My advice is to choose your room carefully-preferably top floor South West corner.

In winter the rooms are very stuffy as there is no ventilation and everybody keeps the windows shut. C02 levels rise.

Good managers and good facilities.

This place is awesome! If you can in any possible way squeeze a couple of free days, or three, or even 2 weeks - go here, you will love it! This hostel is absolutely beautiful, huge clean dorms, REALLY good showers and is in a beautiful Art-Deco building. I'm not normally a fan of YHAs as I often find them very impersonal, but this place is the exception to the rule - everyone there was lovely, and the staff are the friendliest I've ever met in a hostel. They go out of there way to help you. This place has excellent communal areas (and when I say excellent, I mean excellent!) and a great friendly atmosphere about the whole place. You got to check it out! You won't regret it, I swear.

Whilst visiting the Blue Mountains earlier this year a group of friends and myself stayed in this wonderful YHA. There is plenty to do during the day if you like hiking and viewing some of the most breath taking sights in the world. If the nights get boring then nip to the bottle shop next door, get a box of VB, sit back in the luxurious TV lounge and whatch a few of the many videos on selection. The bedrooms are spaceous, clean and the facilities are very new. All together a great place to spend a relaxing week.
