Everone for themselves. Your food if left in fridge subject to dissapearance.Noisy but since clients are in 19-30 on the whole is to be expected.Location is ok but not a factor as Sydney has excellent transit. My bed linen not changed unless i contacted staff .I was there a week on arrival in OZ and after 4 months i concluded the Maze not in top 10 of places i stayed at.Staff is revolving door variety.

My stay in a 4 bed dorm at Maze was brilliant fun... The rooms were clean and facilities exceptional. Clean linen (even duvet) was supplied and the showers were hot. Maze also organised a wicked cheap night out in Kings Cross, with drop off and free drinks vounchers.. All staff were helpful and friendly.

The worst hostel!!, July 29, 2004

The good:

1. Good location. I think that this is the only one reason that Maze has many guests.

The bad:

1. No baggage storage room. You have to hire a locker (at least $3 for 12 hours) If you want to leave your baggage at the reception, they will charge you.

2. No electric sockets in the room. If you want to charge your mobile phone or camera, you have to get it done at the reception desk (or the corridor!) If there are many mobile phones or cameras in que, your mobile phone/camera will not be fully charged. Normally, I can use my camera for 70 minutes if it is fully charged. However, I could use my camera just only for 15 minutes when they charged it for me.

3. It is always busy at the reception desk. As such, you will have to wait for a long time if you want to contact them.

4. Old hostel, creaky bed and floor.

5. Be careful if you ask them to book for an airport bus for you. Please ask them to write the pick up time on your ticket. Someone at the reception desk booked for the bus for me. Unfortunately, she told me a wrong time and I missed the bus. It would have been great if someone at the reception desk had suggested me what I should have done, for example, caught the train to airport or called the airport bus. On the contrary, he ignored me and took no responsibility. This reflects that he is unhelpful. Book for the airport bus by yourself would be best.

We booked into maze for 8days but luckily we only paid for 4upfront. We had a twin as there was no doubles available. The room was so so small and it stunk even after leaving the window open all day. There was no air circulation even with the fan on. The pillows were filithy, I read that they had new linen...whats the point in putting new linen on dirty pillows? Admitidly the kitchen was ok, messy and crowed but better than some. The entrance is so decieving. It looks fun and great but its really just a dirty hovel. The bathrooms made us cringe every time we had to take a shower. The worst moment was when we woke up with huge cockroaches in the room, loads of them. That was it , we left. I would never recommend this palce to anyone ever. 'Footprints' straight across the road is far better , more expensive but much much better and only up he road you have 'wake up' and the 'yha' the two best hostels in sydney. Dont be fooled by the happy cheery entrance.... the non-english speaking rude staff should have given us a clue of what was to come. I was so disapointed , luckily we had friends to resue us and save our last few days of our fab 12month trip around oz!!!!!!!!!!! This place just needs a major clean up-paint, carpets, batrooms and itd be excellent as the lay out and the location is great. I read all the reviews and can come to the only conclusion that all these people raving about the maze were so pissed on the free(cheap and disgusting wine) that they couldnt see what a hell whole they were sleeping in - or care. Some of us back packers would rather not share our rooms with cockroaches , that doesnt mean were anal!!!!!!!! Enjoy Oz , the best place in the world.

The Maze was the first place that i arrived when i got to Sydney (well Australia). As i am travelling alone i was worried that i wouldn't have anyone to speak to, and i would be all alone. I couldn't have been more wrong. All the activities that they have there get you meeting people in a jiffy! To break the ice... free wine!!!!!! I would recommend this hostel to anyone travelling alone and wanting to meet people. It is also central and everything is within a walk away.

I first satyed a year ago and had a good time.

To all the harsh commenters, to be fair the place now has all new matresses and linen. Has been painted and freshened up and I had a fantastic time!!!!

In all honesty you can't beat the freindliness of the staff, great location and the good time you will have here. Really easy to meet people at organised activities, and we love the free wine.......and hangovers!!!

Ok so it isn't the flashest and newest hostel but it is clean and comfertable and cheap and lots of fun. The up side is that it is that there is loads of activities and most importantly free booze.

The staff are really cool and the friendliest I have met.

The Maze has a very relaxed and hapy vibe and it is easy to meet people to party with. I came for a few days and stayed a month.....need I say more. Thanks to the Maze and it's staff. Give it a go and make your own judgement, if you are anal this aint the place for youXXXXX

Not the cleanest or the newest, a little cramped but all I needed was a place to sleep. Travel staff were very friendly and helpful

The biggest problem was the people partying alnight and leaving a big mess for the people up at a normal time. Doesn't anyone in Oz use a rubbish bin?

Good location Definitely not the best, but I would stay there again.

I'm glad I only checked into this hostel for one night because it was definitely the worst I've ever seen and I've been travelling around Oz for 8 months so that's saying something. The receptionist was rude, but I ignored that, I also didn't mind the 5 minute trek to my dorm so much. But for $26 you'd think they could clean the room - it STANK, the sheets had dodgy stains all over them, and the bathroom was filthy too. The worst point had to have been when I was woken up and told we all had to evacuate the room because one of the other girls had found bed-bugs - I was dressed and ready to move before they discovered it was only ants - still pretty disgusting if it was your bed! I only spent 7 hours there but it was horrible - avoid at all costs!

Small rooms. No electric sockets in the rooms. Mobiles have to be charged at the reception desk. The staff are very careful with the mobiles but one would still feel insecure. A little rowdy for loners wanting some quiet time to think and reflect. The toilets are not cleaned everyday. Plasters, dirt, hair... Take your pick. But the location is great. On a whole, the people there are very helpful. If you want a good location and are not too effy about the conditions, I guess this is not too bad.
