Being an Aussie and having journeyed to Sydney many times I have found it is the best I have stayed at.

Many of those in the Cross and Glebe are on the unhygenic side and not secure. I have stayed in a number of flea holes and rooms were there are too many people.

I am willing to pay a little extra for quality. It depends on your standards. Also I like a good night's sleep.

If you are at the Cross or Glebe you have to add the cost of transport into the city onto your accomodation bill. This hostel is already there.

This hostel is the next block to the interstate rail station (Central) and also the interstate and country buses- 5 minutes away.

Great views fron the top floor and it has a swimming pool and sauna. Lots of TV rooms in case you don't like "Home and Away".

The dorms are not crowded as YHA complies with NSW Health regulations.

Kitchen is clean and adequate. There is a great bar downstairs and a convenience store and cafe as well.

The downside is that it is almost always booked out a few days ahead. It has one of the highest occupancy rates in Australia (98.6%). I wonder why.

Good facilities, well located.......but, the usual YHA rules apply ; its too big, impersonal and regimental. Thats all I can say. Nice for a night, as applied to me on my way to the airport the next day, but for a longer stay in Sydney would probably be a bit boring.

I agree with people saying that this place is huge as it has over 500 beds and while I was staying there it was booked out, but if you're willing to make the effort then there are a lot of people to meet here. It may be a little more expensive than some of the other hostels around the city but it is clean and does have good facilities. Sydney is an expensive city so if you want something fairly decent you will probably have to pay a little extra for it.

It's an easy stroll down to the harbour but if you think it is too far to walk then you can hop on a train just across the street and travel the couple of stations down to Circular Quay. The city trams down to Darling Harbour also leave from Central Station as well as the Greyhound/McCafferty's buses so I think that this hostel is actually quite well placed. So if your budget allows it and you aren't intimidated by lots of people then I think this hostel is a good place to stay.

If I could, I'd actually give this hostel two and a half stars. It's very central (in spite of what the reviewer below says. It's a good 20 minutes walk from the Harbour, but there's lots of Sydney to see on the way!), it has fantastic facilities - including the biggest kitchen in any Australian hostel I ever stayed in. And it's clean - which can't be said of all hostels, particularly in Sydney.

However, it's a bit big (5 floors) and impersonal. It just doesn't encourage much mingling, and there's relatively no atmosphere.

I stayed at the YHA for my first week of a year's working holiday. When I think of some of the grubby places I stayed in later, I was lucky to have such a comfortable, sanitary start. But I was naturally a bit homesick, and found it a bit daunting.

It's also quite expensive.

If you're passing through Sydney, and don't want to pay hotel prices, then I'd recommend it as a safe, clean, and central stopover. But for fun and a feel for the city, go elsewhere!

Incidentally, I stayed in a few YHAs around Oz, and overall felt the exact same way about them all.

The hostel is to far from all the mayor attractions. You can't stay longer then 14 days. It's expensive.

Yeah they got some cool stuff in there, but that's not what I look for.

Sydney Central YHA is a great "all-encompassing" hostel. There are TV lounges, great laundry facilities, a travel desk, bar, barbecue area and pool. It is an enormous place, so it feels a little formal, and is not for everyone. But if you don't mind a larger hostel, Sydney Central YHA has heaps of stuff to keep you occupied and is in a very convenient and happening location.

Has a convinient location with quite reasonable "value for money" in the area. As a single traveler excellent facilities. The rooms are very bare and for $80 a double room if you are a couple there are better equipped rooms with more privacy for a similar price.

The hostel has excellent security, is situated very close to anything you could ever want in Sydney. It even has a pool, spa and sauna! The downside is that it is quite expensive. It was $29 with a YHA Membership Discount.
