I've stayed in many hostels over the last five years, Wake Up is an excellent example of how a city hostel should be.It doesn't feel as important in the country or at the beach but being in the heart of a busy city, you can feel quite vulnerable at times, not just in Sydney but most major cities where crime unfortunately happens! security of this hostel is definately the best i've come across! I noticed people have complained about the key card system, yep it can be a pain but believe me from experience, better to have a minor annoyance from key cards than be robbed or attacked! It was clean, (do need bigger bins in the dorms) all the staff were real friendly and helpfull, (great cleaning staff ) It's got a fun bar in the basement, great for meeting other travellers, and a great starting place for sydney whether you're heading on elsewhere or staying to look for a job and maybe more long term accomodation like i did, i was in Sydney for 6 months working and travelling, and wake up and it's bar were a great staying and socialising place to have, cheers to Wake Up!

I stayed at Wake Up for 2 nites.Very very disappointed. First, no one clear up the rubbish bin in the room though the rubbish bin has no more room to accomodate rubbish!Second, the toilet/bathroom are dirty and smelly. I saw some tissues, rubbish on the floor in the very early morning, however when I got back in late night they are still there!! It is unacceptable. Third, you have to use your keycard even go to toliet,lift...It's painful!!It's not worth to pay such amount of money to obtain this sort of service!

I had heard so many good things about this hostel, but don't beleive any of them. The toilets were filthy, there was vomit in the hallways, the staff were unfriendly. I reported that 3 people in my room were bitten by bugs, and one girl had to stay in hospital for 3 days, the staff laughed and said that it happens everywhere, and that they had 3 floors already infected. I wanted to see my friends on other floors but my card swipe wouldn't work, this could be very dangerous in an emergency. Opposite the hostel street bums live and harass you at night time for money and smokes. This is not a good place for a single girl to stay in, or for anyone else that wants a nice hostel.

This hostel has good and bad points. The rooms have high ceilings and new carpet and the hallways are nice, but it is a huge impersonal place and you have to have a security card to go EVERYWHERE which is kind of a pain! Going to the tiolet in the middle of the night can be a real pain because you need to swipe your card to get into the bathroom and they almost never work on the first or second try! The thing that bugged me the most was that our room was poorly lit. There was one overhead light with about a 20 watt bulb and you could barely see your hand in front of your face much less find anything in your bag and definitely could not read in bed!

Wake up! is in an excellent location. you can walk to the major attractions. It is relatively clean. In all fairness i have seen the staff clean up the place so i guess its the guest that mess up the place. The female toilet have been filthy few times over the week i was there. The lady at the travel desk is super unfriendly. Other than that this is an ok place to stay in. Quite expensive. There are plenty other backpackers in the vacinity. So you have lots of choices.

I really liked this place - its very clean, modern and in a great location (just across the road from central station and within walking distance of darling harbour, the rocks, the opera house, harbour bridge etc. etc.). The rooms are modern, bright, airy and clean. The communal bathrooms are lovely and were always spotlessly clean when I was there. The Side Bar in the basement is nice and does some great meal deals and happy hours (champagne for $3 - my kind of place!). My only complaint would be the swipe card system - we had friends staying on a different floor and we couldn't get up there to see them so we had to keep leaving each other messages at reception!

The wakeup's location is impressive - opposite central station so using the trains to the airport is extremely easy. A half hour walk up George street will put you in the rocks near the bridge and the opera house, although there is a decent sized bus station as well as the trains if you're too lazy. With regard to the hostel - security as already mentioned is impressive to the point of being almost anal, and the rooms are clean. It ought to be obvious, but you need to book ahead for peak periods such as Mardi Gras and the whole Xmas/NYE period. Don't walk in on NYE looking for a room like I saw two German girls doing, that's plain stupid.Rapid fire good points:- Has an ATM, good bar downstairs with sensible prices, good location, good travel desk, cafe tacked onto the end of it with good tasting coffee - weirdest though good tasting fry up breakies ever - lettuce should not feature in a fry up breakie!Negative points:- It's a bit expensive, it's definately too large for long term stayers (510 beds), if you're there at Xmas we got fully ripped off by their Xmas lunch - don't do it, wasn't anywhere near worth it - their (expensive) internet access computers don't let you open multiple windows - v annoying. Kitchen way too small, chill out area needs sofas.Would stay in it again for up to a week, but definately no longer than that.

I stayed here for a week when I first arrived in Sydney. It's not cheap, but it's in an ideal location to explore, plus it's clean & shiny & new & modern & funky! The dorms are spaceous, with lockers & a big mirror, & are cleaned regularly. There's a bar downstairs which also does good priced meals, the guy at the tour desk is very helpful, & there's always someone at reception. On the minus side... the communal areas are tiny compared to the amount of beds they have & it's quite hard to meet people coz it's sooooo huge!! :-(

This hostel is in a great location and has lots of amenities. On check in I got vouchers for a free breakfast, free drink in the bar, free coffee in the cafe, free internet and free shuttle to the airport. The building is safe and secure, and food was very good. The lounge areas are great. A lot of people stay here for a long term it seemed, so my room was a little smelly and messy from all their stuff, but what can you do right? Overall I was quite impressed with this place.
