Wake Up is totally secure. They issue a card on arrival that only acesses the floor you are staying on and it must be used to get the lift to work in the first place. You even need the card to go to the toilet. Sadly you cannot visit your friends on different floors. Still, it is right at the centre of the bus and train travel and just accross the road from Oz Experience. The staff do tend to be a bit uptight though. I have heard from the cafe staff that a number of their past staff have sued them over their management practices. Well no one's perfect. Now, its a bit expensive but well worth a few days stay.

A very nice place to stay and in a great central location.

It has a great little bar where you can get good meals and is amasingly secure.

However due to its giant size it can be very impersonal and the kitchen and T.V. areas can be overcrowded.

Well worth a stay for a few nights though.

We had the pleasure(!) of staying in Wake Up for almost a month during April and May 2003 while waiting to move into a flat elsewhere in Sydney - the place is initially quite funky, which a nice bar and cafe, internet access and security card access to the rooms. However, the security cards soon get worn out and annoying to use everytime you want to even go to the loo in the middle of the night! There isn't any decent lounge area to hang out - the "tv room" is literally just a load of crash mats that you would get in a school gym and a small tv in the corner, and the music played in the bar is the same on repeat every night or so!!

Price-wise, it's pretty pricey but still cheaper than the YHA down the road... It's a very large hostel and as a result after almost a month there, we were still treated impersonally just like another punter.

If you're in Sydney for a couple of nights then it's ideally located and would be great fun, but if you're looking at staying a bit longer, then look elsewhere!!

I stayed here for 3 nights and it was definitely the best hostel I stayed in during my trip to Oz. Clean and neat, but it may be a bit pricey for the average backpacker. Highly recommend it.

We read your reviews with great interest and found them very helpful as we travelled OZ.

The best place we stayed by far was WAKE UP!

great concept, everything you need in one place, fantastic staff that helped out with any problems we had.

Side bar underneath Wake Up! has great party nights if you are lucky enough to be there for one.

WE'LL BE BACK (hopefully)

This is everything you would expect of such a huge, new hostel. Well-equipped, clean, nicely furnished, centrally located, good bar in the basement. But the keycard security is a little OTT, you need your keycard to get in the toilets and you can only use the lift with your keycard to get to your floor and the ground floor, so if you have friends staying on another floor there is no way of getting to their rooms. Even the stairs are alarmed! So you have to arrange to meet on the ground floor which can be inconvenient. It's obviously impersonal and a bit too big for my liking but it's clean, safe and reliable and good if you're travelling in a group rather than looking to meet people.

Well wake up gets a few mixed reviews but for those who wrote bad things they don't know how good they had it here! I stayed here 1 week and it was the best week, in a 4 bed dorm, clean and nicely done. 24 hour reception and internet, cafe and bar till late. Excellent, bit pricey i will admit but worth it for what you get, staff are great and all such fun. Would come back if i could afford to come back to oz!! Love you guys brilliant backpackers all round!!

It is very central to Sydney city shops and activities and right in the heart of the transport network. Its very expensive for the average backpacker I will admit but it is well worth it if you get to know your way around the staff. Guys if you know how to chat up the girls on reception you can get free email for hours. They are the best! The same goes for most of the place. If you treat the staff right you can get a great deal and that makes it such good value. Wake Up staff you are the best!

Inevitably any big hostel in a large city is going to be impersonal, so personally I would not book into a single/twin room, but a 4-person dorm, that way you get a bit more space, you get to know people, yet you can get some sleep.

The downstairs bar is a good night out and can't be heard from the rooms, which have double glazing and are extremely quiet at night. The restaurant has meals every night for $6, which do the job. And I checked in at 6am so that's not a problem either. Definitely one of the cleanest and securist hostels I stayed in (and I liked it so much I stayed there when I went back)
