I'm not too sure whether anonymous from England stayed the same hostel as me after reading the review below. My experience of the Jolly Swagman was that it was a great place to stay. Having just spent a year in Australia I've stayed in many hostels, a few of these in Kings Cross. Compared to the ones I know of in the Cross, the security at the Swagman is excellent: reception is open 24 hrs, there are lockers in every room and only guests are allowed upstairs. As for the rooms I found my 4-bed dorm both clean and spacious. The previous reviewer said that the beds where 'infested' with bed bugs. I find this strange as The Swagman is one of the few hostels I've stayed in with the policy of not allowing people to use their sleeping bags, so as to stop people bringing bugs into the place. They supply blankets and linen, so you don't need them anyway.

The hostel also has a great amosphere, as there seemed to be quite a few like minded people up for a laugh and everyone congregated in the large open plan social area downstairs.

Overall I'd say the facilities are of a high standard, including a brand new spacious kitchen.

After 7 months travelling Aussie, this place is still the worst we've stayed at. The kitchen is filthy; nothing is EVER cleaned, the bedroom's dark and the stained matresses are infested with bedbugs. The staff were simply a waste of time. Not interested in the guests and certainly no help with jobs or visa's. As for the price - a joke. Still, if you can't afford it there's always space with the homeless drunks on the front lawn.

Just finished a very enjoyable stay at the Jolly Swagman. It's in a great location as it's close to the city and to Bondi Beach. The rooms were clean and the showers were immaculate. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I met a great bunch of people there who I am now travelling with around OZ. I highly recommend this hostel.

I arrived in Sydney from Thailand last November and chose The Jolly Swagman through a friends recomendation. She said that as I was travelling alone, the Swagman would be a great place to meet people, and she was not wrong. Within a day I'd met alot of new friends and drinking buddies to spend my time in Sydney with. As mentioned in previous reviews the social scene at the hostel is excellent and being situated in the centre of Kings Cross, you can party 24 hrs a day if you wish. The staff are very friendly and through their travel desk I booked my Oz Experience ticket as well, which I'm presently enjoying. When I return to Sydney I'll definitely be back in the Swagman.

Well, Ive just come to the end of my visit here in Sydney and can honestly say that my time here at the Jolly Swagman was one of the highlights. Its an excellent hostel with good facilities, friendly staff and a great atmosphere. If your looking for work or just to wanting to hang out with fellow travelers then this hostel is a must! unlike most other hostels, this one has 24hr reception which is excellent for those late arrivals or if you lose your keys after a drink or two(as I did on more than one occasion!).

Don't normally bother with entering reviews but after seeing the slating that some people have given this place I thought I should write to tell you my experience. When I stayed the place was very clean, the bathrooms had just been re fitted so were brand new and the staff were very friendly. Whilst I stayed there I was rarely out of work as there were agencies and employers phoning into reception every morning looking for workers. The general atmosphere was very social and I made plenty of good mates, some of which I am now travelling up the coast with. So go check it out is my advise.

The hostel's facilities - in particular the kitchen - are quite poor and not very clean. There are fridges in the bedrooms which anyone who lives in Sydney will immediately know is a stupid idea - if you bring food into a bedroom, the cockroaches will soon be joining you. 3 staff were working in turn on reception while I was there- one was very good, one average to poor, and one abysmal. This particular staff member appeared to have complete contempt for the guests. This attitude was also shown to a lesser extent by a number of "long-term inmates."

However, I did enjoy the time there and met quite a lot of people- although this was my first hostel in Aus and I was too excited/drunk/jet lagged to notice the faults. I would not return for a second stay.

DIRTY A PLACE TO AVOID, February 17, 2002

I choose the hostel from their broucher at the airport it looked very nice. But oh what a dissapointment the place was filthy with cigarette butts and cockcroaches everywhere. Two of my room mates were covered in insect bites after sleeping on the hostels lumpy and stained matresses. The bathrooms were crap, broken toilets and shower heads, no maintenance work seemed to of been carried out.

The staff were very rude and stuck up and their was no help in finding work apart from the comment "buy a newspaper".

Not a nice place to stay a place to avoid.
