Victoria Street is the place to stay. Short walk to Kings-X train station, or walk to the city central on sunny days. My favourite walk is down the McElhone stairs to Harry's cafe on Cowper Wharf Road, having the pie or hotdog on the Finger Wharf, then through Botanic Gardens and Hyde Park. Stayed in a big double room on the second floor in the white building nextdoor with view of Centrepoint Tower, small old TV (not so good picture reception with only local stations), fridge (great for storing snacks), microwave (never used it), and sink. Nice, quite big bathroom for 4 rooms on the 2nd floor. If occupied, you can use other bathrooms on the other floor or the next building. Free bread, cereal and milk for breakfast (saving money for sightseeing/transport). Didn't join free BBQ night, so no comment on that. Staff courtesy and cleanliness of the hostel is within standard, could be better, but quite OK.

One would usually associate King Cross as being unsafe and unruly, but the hostel is in fact situated on a pleasant and quiet street. I stayed in a double room and got gorgeous views of the Sydney Bridge. There is even a small balcony where u can make tea and enjoy the view. The airport express bus-stop is right outside the door step and the staff is very friendly, and took time to explain the lay-out of Sydney to me. It is also a short walk to Paddington and the King Cross's train station is nearby. My room is newly painted, but the facilities do show some sign of age. Nevertheless, it is great value when you compared it to other hostels in the city area. Thoroughly recommended!
