What a mix of comments. We found it to be one of the cleanest hostels around - so don't understand the comments otherwise. Newtown is a great place, so even if you don't stay here you should check it out. As for Billabong, well it is a hostel but one that is better than average in every way. By the way, the internet is free, they have 3 brand new terminals and it's fast.

If you're seriouis about really seeing the true side of Sydney, then you gotta stay in Newtown. This is where all the students from Sydney Uni live and go out at night. Also lots of musicians, artists, punks, gays - it's just a great place to hang out and meet the local people. If you stay in Central Sydney or Kings Cross, (yuck!) at one of those huge backpackers, you will just go out with other travellers - boring!!! If you want to meet Australians and live in the cool part of town, then stay in Newtown.Billabong is definitely the best hostel in Newtown, (and probably one of the best in Sydney). Very friendly, relaxed and really clean. Good dorms with only 4 or 6 people in them and they got a swimming pool (more like a large bath but at least it's clean!) and free internet that is fast and almost always available.Anyway, make up your own mind but I've seen a lot of Sydney and a lot of other hostels - this is one of the best.

Such a mixture of reviews! I loved staying here and found the dorm I stayed in very clean. The facilities are also great and there's a lovely pool surrounded by plants that makes for a really nice atmosphere. Newtown is full of charm if you like to get away from the usual backpacker trail. Highly recommended if you like a relaxed, friendly place to stay. They don't cram you in at all and all the dorms have their own bathroom. I think for the price it's great value.

Billabong Gardens was an awesome choice for a place to stay in Sydney. Newtown is really cool, and it's a place where you are actually mingling with people who live there, not just heaps of other backpackers (but if you want to, they're cool here too). The hostel is great... it's super cheap (I refuse to pay upwards of $30 in the city centre...) and very clean, and very comfy! Plus they have free internet, free pickup, and free luggage storage! That is brilliant! Overall they're just really helpful there, giving lots of ideas for things to do both in Newtown and in Sydney in general. As a tip, I would recommend buying a red travel pass if you're going to take public transport a lot.... for a week, the pass is good value and will get you from Newtown to tons of places... City centre, Bondi & Coogee, Pyrmont, Balmain, Paddington, Kings Cross... it's all good.I only recommend this because Billabong Gardens is great and shouldn't be passed by just because of the transport issue!

We stayed in the terrace next door and LOVED IT! It is separated by a small park (with swings - perfect for little ones), from the main building so it is quite serene. The terrace is an old Victorian style terrace, so it is full of character and we found it charming with it's high ceilings and polished wooden floors. There is a lovely back courtyard where you can sit under an olive tree. It may not suit everyone, but we prefer character over some new, cramped, sterile place. While the terrace is showing signs of age, it is clean. What we loved most about staying in Newtown is the proximity to the City and sights. Plus the excellent local restaurants and cafes. I suppose it depends what you like, but we felt we actually stayed IN Sydney and mixed with the locals in the bars, cafes and shops. We had a fantastic stay!

Cool place. They play great tunes, (always a good indication of what a place will be like in my books), and the staff know how to look after you. After spending plenty of time in other hostels, (don't bother with Kings Cross), this place is the cleanest and friendliest we've been to. Best of all, Newtown is a pretty hip area - heaps of cool bars and cafes etc and live music on weekends, (it's a little like Camden in London). Forget the tourist traps and come and see where the locals hang.

We meant to stay in Sydney 3 days and stayed 3 weeks! This place is fantastic. The cleanest dorms we found in Australia with clean sheets and everyone gets their own duvet. There's a TV room with free internet and valuable lockers at reception. The staff are amazing - they helped find us work, told us the really cool places in Sydney to go and generally looked after everyone really well. If you're looking for a super clean hostel with really friendly staff, then you can't beat this place.
