I agree with the other 2 reviews. There were 4 other people staying there (it only sleeps 25 anyway) as September is a quiet month. It was ideal for me though as I needed somewhere to chill after partying a bit too hard in Airlie Beach ! The dorms were spacious and clean as was the kitchen and communal areas and the showers are something else - I've never seen showers as good in any hostels in many different countries - honestly. Richard and Nathan the guys who run it were really friendly and heplful and I spent most of my time there playing cards with them. I also liked the fact that there were no locks on doors or even on the bikes - a trusting place.

1770 was a last minute decision which turned out to be well made. Arrived after dark and tired after driving all day, nothing could have been more welcome than a cold beer which is what I got! Only one dorm and the door is left open and unlocked because they trust people, I like that! Can get a bit cold but they provide blankets. The shower is AMAZING, almost the best thing about the hostel! The kitchen is large and has everything you need to cook a feast! The town doesn't offer much of a night life so more suited to those who want to chill in relative solitude. Unfortunately could only stay 1 night but I'm definitely going back. A nice surprise in the middle of nowhere!

Although small, with 12 beds in one room I was the only person there. I found the facilities ok but the place was empty. I had heard so much on the road about 1770 and that this really disappointed me. As a backpacker you try to get the best deal and a few freebies but I got none. You get dropped off with Greyhound at the hostel but in the morning when i arrived there was nobody there at reception. After the trip from Airlie Beach you would hope reception would be open. The Owner when arrived was nice but I found the hostel cold in winter. Maybe due to the shade cloth roof. The town is lovely and the people are friendly but this hostel is not my kind of a hostel. I know there is another in town as I have heard from my travel buddies but I was only there for one night. Don't be put off but have alook around at alternatives.
