this hostel rocks!!, the new manager mark is very friendly as are all the other staff. Its slightly out of town.. like a 2minute walk so its not noisy or full of drunken groups but is well chilled out. people congregate around the bar area outside every night to chill over a few beers and its is all very welcoming, especially if your travelling on your own.. would reccomend this hostel to anyone. all the dorms are 4 bed only and theres shelves to unpack!!! bathrooms and kitchens spotless!!!!

excellent, want to go back even if it is a detour!!!

It was an ok hostel. The crew was great, like Paul. But the place is kind of run down and very dirty. The stand up urinal in the men's bathroom hasn't been cleaned in 6 months it looks like. I had a 4 dorm and it stunk really bad. Quiet and a small walk down the street from the noise of the town which was great.

I don't know if this hostel was newly renovated but it was def well maintained.

I stayed here for a while and had a really good time. The bar and the quiz held everyday at 6:30pm really encourages everyone to mix so its easy to make friends. I made lots of friends here. Jo the manager is so helpful too. The swimming pool is also always nice and cool unlike the Lagoon pool which heats up and turns into a bath in the afternoon in the summer months. So nice to go back to the hostel pool after the lagoon for the afternoon. Went out quite a lot with people i met from this hostel. Definately and highly recommend. I am planning to go to Airlie Beach again and I will stay here again when I do!!

Small, cozy, great view, air con rooms, March 3, 2006

Overall, this hostel was excellent. We were a couple (24yrs old) and not looking for all out drinking and partying, but rather a more laid-back atmosphere and found just that. Airlie Beach is really just a gateway to the Whitsundays and cruises, and all hostels there cater to cruise bookings and the like. What set this place apart from the rest was the great view of the bay, the friendly atmosphere, and the lack of proximity to the crazier hostels (like Magnums). We were in a 4-bunk room and it was great... air con was key. Its a bit of a walk (maybe 10 mins tops) from the main strip of bars, which is a bit of a pain if you're into the whole bar scene... but if you are, then you probably wouldnt enjoy Backpackers by the Bay anyways. Overall, for Airlie Beach, we've heard nothing but praise for this hostel, and our experience confirms it.

A great hostel. We had a double room and used the pool, loungers, bar and laundry. Very friendly staff and other backpackers - some young and some older. Nightly quiz while waiting for the Domino pizzas to arrive was a great laugh. Rooms are not en-suite. I was lucky as our room was next to the ladies toilet and shower room. Boyfriend had to walk past reception to have a shower, but it wasn't a problem. Lovely views over Airlie Beach and just a few minutes walk into town. The hostel has a bar and the drinks were very reasonable.

BBB is the best place iv stayed in Aus (iv been to about 13 hostels). It may not be the biggest place but my time there was fantastic.

Where its smaller and family run the place feels very friendly and personal. Also it was easy to meet people because of nice touches like a free quiz every night.

I probabaly like it so much cos i met a great bunch of people when i was there which made everything so much more fun. As the saying goes - people make places.

But the hostel plays a bit part in this because its a great place for hanging out and chilling. Bigger hostels are often cluttered with people and are a lot less personal.

Other pluses are: everything is clean and of a pretty decent standard. Reception is friendly and helpful. The pool is nice. The view from the place is FANTASTIC (its so nice chilling out whilst looking out over the ocean). Its got all the facilities like tv, laundry, pool table etc (though their net facilities are a bit rubbish).

And the people complaining about the distance in2 town must just be lazy asses. Its like a 3 minute walk and maybe 5 from the bars. Its better this way because your close to the action without being stuck next to some bar or something. Plus the drunken walks home were always amusing (as were the 3am international belly flop contests).

I personally just have great memories of the place and would go back there anytime.

My only complaints about this hostel:

It isn't in the middle of town... you have to walk over a small hill and it takes a few minutes. It isn't a big deal, but with so many hostels on the main road, why not stay there?

My other complaints is that they don't have real beds--just foam mattresses. It's not uncommon in hostels and most backpackers probably don't care, but if you have back pain you will care.

There is a nice common area, an ok kitchen and a pretty pool with a view of the water. There was AC that ran at night and made it freezing, while during the day the AC goes off and it can get warm. Our dorm still cost about $22 with YHA.

When I arrived in Airlie I originally stayed in another (unnamed) bigger hostel in which I found the atmosphere to be too detatched. This hostel has a personal feel to it where you can feel looked after without feeling guarded. This is most likely due to the fact that most of the friendly staff are travellers too and know what it is like to be out on your own. Also being a 5 minute walk from town it is a relief to sit by the pool and get a great view over the bay (hence the name I guess). A "must stay" for anyone visiting Airlie beach.

I can't recommend this hostel highly enough. The staff are fantastic, they really go out of their way to help. Everyone smiles at you and knows your name.

I just loved the pool area, cos it was so hot in February. I spent most of the time floating in the pool and looking out at the ocean. It is in a beautiful location - right on the waterfront. There was heaps of shady places to read and talk to other people too. There is a free library at the reception desk so I caught up on some reading.

It rained one of the days I was there, and so the hostel put on videos all day, and gave out popcorn.

The previous comments about the air conditioning made me laugh. Why didn't you just turn down the thermostat? There is a dial in your room right on the air conditioner? Actually, my girlfriend asked at the reception desk for a blanket (which she didn't have to pay for) and then didn't use it anyway. I would much rather have to use a blanket than stay in some of the places that don't have air conditioning - especially when it is THIS hot.

They also have a phone so friends can call you. I've missed this at most of the places we have stayed.

I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could! Try it.

I don't normally do reviews like this but I felt compelled to write one after reading "Anonymous from UK"'s poor review. I was actually walking past reception when these lasses were yelling at the receptionist and I was disgusted - fair enough bed bugs - yuck but they were so rude and obnoxious!! Also, I lived in the room two doors down from the "bed bug room" and I know for a fact nobody stayed in that room for 2 days because the owner took it apart to fumigate - I enjoyed my time at this hostel, my boyfriend and I had a great laugh and a relaxed stay keep up the good work Backpackers By the Bay - I say get the carrot out of your ass anonymous from UK!!
