Spent two noisy nights at this not so clean hostel. My room was next door to the mens toilets which kept me awake for most of the night,(puking and showering at 3am)! Not to mention the local tumble dryer doing its noisy spins! Staff were pretty out of it,(if you know what I mean) and weren't particularly approachable. Won't step foot in there again! Nice view, shame about the pool.

I spent the xmas and new year here of my life! quizzies every night where you can win champaigne at daily happy hour! nick - you are a star mate! this hostel overlooks the whitsundays and is truly the place to be social and to chill out. whats more, its only a few mins walk away from all the action, its a hidden gem!, so do yourself a favour and dont bother with anywhere else as this hostel really makes arlie beach! undoubtly my favourite from my travels around oz!

I came here intending to stay 4 days. After an awesome time sailing around the whitsundays (siska is the best boat) I ended up staying over TWO WEEKS! The place just gets you. the swimming pool overlooking the bay, nick at happy hour, the big armchairs.... and everyone is just soo friendly and layed back. Cheack this place out before checking into anywhere else in Airlie and you will not believe it! Just dont get trapped there!

Stayed November 2002

I've been backpacking around Oz for three weeks now. I've stayed at a total of 8 hostels here and about 14 others in Europe and Canada. I must say that Backpackers by the Bay is one of my favorites.

First of all, the location is excellent-- perched upon a hill overlooking the gorgeous turquois bay with the green Whitsunday islands in the distance. The view makes everything more special . . . even if you are just drinking a coffee on the patio, floating on noodles in the saltwater pool, hanging out on the sunlovers lounge, eating breakfast, or chilling with some new friends after happy hour and the nightly quiz. (champagne giveaway).

As others have mentioned, this is one of the great features of this hostel because it encourages socialization ... this is why i don't usually like yha type hostels. People tend to keep to their own in those environments. I like meeting new people and this hostel definitely attracts a very friendly, laid-back, yet funloving and goodnatured crowd. Happy hour is usually hosted by Nick--a very sociable, enthusiastic, comedic and funloving character: definitely entertaining.

The town is just a short walk away. You can wander past the pool and down the short back staircase, which brings you to the main road into town. In just a few minutes you are in the center of Airlie Beach nightlife. When you're ready, however, you can leave all that behind and come home to a calm and tranquil starlit retreat -- a wonderful, safe place to rest.

The current owners put a lot of thought and effort into a massive renovation of the hostel when they bought it -- and you can tell. The showers, rooms, bathrooms, everything are like new and impecabbly clean. There's even a hairdryer in the ladies room. The hallways have fun paintings and stencils of sealife. Most of the rooms have air conditioning and I believe all have ceiling fans and back doors that open to the outside . . . so you can step out for some fresh air, hang up your laundry, whatever. We were very comfortable.

The kitchen is pretty large, with plenty of supplies for your meals and plenty of room in the fridge. There's complimentary tea and coffee and you can also buy breakfast, cereal, milk, drinks, beer, snacks, laundry powder, etc at reception. There is internet access, but only during reception hours and it's just one computer. There are plenty of places a in town, however, and many are open until 11pm.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. We booked our overnight sailing trip with southern cross on the british defender --- and had a fabulous time. I highly recommend sailing with this company. You get a free night of accomodation when you book with them in addition to free luggage store while you're away on the trip.

When I returned from sailing, I was supposed to go to surfers paradise, but instead I stayed for two more nights. :)

I stayed @ the Backpacker by the Bay in early September 2002, touring on a motorcycle. The owner (a real friendly character) did not take offence by my full leather regalia. My room was not that great, but the shared facilities are modern and spotless clean. The pool is large and a great relief after a day's hard riding in Queensland's heat.

At 5:30 pm a "happy hour" takes place beside the pool. If you more sociable than I am, you can participate in some ice-breaker games. They are usually followed by dinner in town and pub crawl.

The bottom line: very recommendable, would stay there any time again.

This is a great place to meet others in Airlie. Each night they run a quiz or other activity around the pool, with a happy hour out of the eski, and encourage people to mix. The place is decent and clean, however only about half the rooms have air-con - make sure you request a room with air conditioning if you are there in summer, as you'll suffer otherwise. It's about 5 - 10 mintues walk into town.

a short distance from the main street with fantastic views over the bay. Small but clean rooms, helpful staff, great facilities including small grocery store and laundery, courtesy bus. Would strongly recommend!

We arrived after a very long bus journey, and found the staff very friendly and helpful - a change from other places we have been. The hostel is also very clean - another thing that isn't always usual!! But it is the location that won us over - just beautiful views of the water.

This hostel is clean, comfortable and incredibly friendly. The chilled out feel, the superb garden over looking the water and the brillant staff make this place a pleasure to stay at. Well done Pete,Carloyn and all the staff!
