A decent enough hostel that feels more like a resort with cabins for 6 people rather than dorms. Every one of these cabins has a tv. The swimming pool is the weirdest I have ever swam in, one tiny deep end that isn't that deep and the rest is very very shallow. Don't try bombing into the pool. The lagoon pool is much better for swimming in and only 2 minutes walk. There is a beach volleyball court but most of the time it is used as a clothes line! The only problem I have with this hostel is that the staff don't seem to know which rooms to check people in to. Before we went to the Whitsundays we had 4 people trying to get into a room that already had 6 people in it and the same happened to us when we got back, eventually we got changed to a room with some spare beds in it. They offer back storage for if you are away on the Whitsunday cruises but they charge $3 a day. It is generally clean but the outside communal areas could be better. Not a worst hostel but then again not the best.

I recently stayed at Koala Beach Resort in Airlie Beach. I had an unbeleivable time. The staff could not have done more to make me feel welcome and the rooms were very clean with comfy beds and free satellite tv in every dorm. I definately recommend this place to all. There was always loads of travellers in the bar havin' a ball

On my way up the east coast with Oz Experience I planned to stop in Airlie Beach for 2 nights and do some sailing. My bus driver recommended I stay at Koala. I did my sailing on the Pride of Airlie and returned to Koala's. I met up with everyone after sailing for dinner at Koala's Bar. We all had the best time sailing and I made some really nice friends. Anyway i ended up staying at koala's hostel for a week! They have the best rooms with the movie channel and great pool area. It was just acrooss the road from the lagoon and right in the centre of town. I will never forget the time i had at koala's. I definately recommend fellow travellers stay at Koala's and get to know there friendly staff.

I decided to stay in koalas because i found they were a reputable company who i had stayed with in noosa and hervey bay and had received good service.

The resort in airlie is a comfortable size, very social and the staff will do as much as possible to give you what you need.

Every week koalas hold a sunday session at the pool side bar which offers a free barbie with a really good DJ. Tuesday evening is another bbq which is very reasonably priced and any other day of the week guests can eat at moroccos which is a very popular pub and get $4 off their meals.

The rooms have ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning and satellite TV. Theres heaps to do at koalas, a licensed bar and bistro, job club and internet facilities, tropical pool and spa, tennis courts and volley ball nets.

The resort is on the main strip of airlie, just minutes away from pubs, clubs, cafes, shops and most importantly the marina, which koalas can organise the whole trip to whitehaven beach (the most popular island to visit cause by the way its breath taking)!!!

The prices of the trips are very reasonable too because koalas is right next to the whitsundays so they offer fantastic discounts for us poor backpackers.

Koalas is definately the place to stay in airlie as it is a great place for the amount of facilities they provide and the atmosphere is good too, all for a really good price!

Lisa

We were originally booked in at Koalas Airlie for 3 nights and we ran away after one. Our room was filthy with dead cockroaches on the floor and spiders everywhere. We didn't even have a shower in our room because it was cleaner to go without one. The staff was very rude and when we witnessed the cleaners go into our disgusting room they ran an old mop on the floor around bags and walked right back out. Do not stay here!

I really hope that the management will give the Koala stuff a course in service and how to be polite to their costumers! I have been traveling all around the world and this is truly the worst hostel ever! For me is it ok to stay in a bad room IF the stuff is nice but they have the worst room AND the worst stuff ever. Thank good for the other hostels around this shit place Koala!!!!

Shabby, dirty, bed bugs, December 9, 2003

I stayed here in June and found the rooms damp and dirty. Bedding provided was dark blue, probably to hide stains and blood marks from the numerous bed bugs. There were not enough keys for the dorm so had to share. Rip-off $5 BBQ night, crap food, one sausage and small tough "steak". Poor kitchen facilities and deposit on pans etc. Plus daily charges for luggage storage. Look elsewhere

It was a busy time when we arrived at Airlie Beach. We had not heard great things about Koalas but assumed it wouldn't be so bad. We had organised accomodation here through a sailing trip package anyway. For starters the grotty van nearly drove off without as when we got off the bus. The hostel was filthy, had the worst kitchen facilities I had ever had to use, it was impersonal, the staff were unfriendly and a whole dorm next to us got bed bugs and had to be evacuated. The outside pool was dirty, there was no bar to meet other people at on the site and it was just one of the worst places to stay. Yes, it was cheap and central but I still can't believe we stayed the full four nights. What really winds me up about this place is the way it was advertised. It sounded like heaven, lush grounds, fantastic facilities, great pools........ I am sure they should be sued for misrepresentation!

DISGUSTING ROOMS (OURS SMELT OF PEE - WE THEN COMPLAINED AND GOT MOVED, AND THE SECOND ROOM WAS JUST AS BAD!)

UNFRIENDLY, UNHELPFUL STAFF TOO!

HONESTLY, LOOKING BACK, I WOULD PAY THAT LITTLE BIT EXTRA AND GO SOMEWHERE THAT YOUR ROOM DOESNT SMELL LIKE A URINAL! ROOMS WERE ALSO DIRTY, LOOKED LIKE THEY HADNT BEEN CLEANED IN AFEW WEEKS.

We came to Airlie hopeing that Koalas would not be as bad as some have said. They are right. The people at the desk are so rude! No manners and they couldn't care less if they helped you or not. It is completely over priced and so not with it! Do not stay here.

We actually paid and then checked out the place. We are leaving first thing tomorrow morning to check into another hostel. It is so bad here. Seriously, don't bother.
