I stayed here while travelling round Oz a few years ago, and I agree with the previous review that said it was cold. I remember being distinctly chilly the whole time I stayed there - which is unusual enough, I think, for an Australian hostel.

My experience of YHAs in Oz tended to be similar - they have the best facilities and are the most spacious, but they're completely soulless. The Brisbane YHA was large with a well-equipped kitchen, large clean bathrooms, working washing machines, a decent communal room - and a small library. But it was completely dead - and quite freezing cold.

When you first start travelling, you want comfort, cleanliness and space, but after staying at a few YHAs, I happily swapped all these for messy, cosy, and friendly alternatives.

Anyway, one of the main reasons we all go to Oz is for the year-round hot weather. There is no excuse to stay somewhere cold!

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with this hostel...I stayed there in July, and the room was REALLY cold at night and in the morning. Maybe they did not expect "cold Brisbane", but I got a sick after that. Kitchen was small, shower was OK, and room was not so clean. I strongly recommend you should bring a warm blanket with you if you go in winter.

Having stayed in few hostels over past 7 months in Oz, have to say this one probably one of the worst. Not to say staff not helpful, just bit tired and run down, and kitchen below normal standards and whole place just lacking atmosphere really. However the little cafe on site does good budget meals if you get fed up of the state of the kitchen

At $60/night (non-member fee) for a double room, this place is pricier than the cheaper, sleazier hostels right next door. But it was worth the cost, because the YHA was clean, comfortable, and brightly coloured, with a friendly, helpful reception, and clean roomy bathrooms. I stayed in a room in the newer front building, which had a nice view of the railway bridge outside. The cafeteria is open to all and serves good cheap meals.

Book ahead as this hostel tends to fill up quickly.
