From the outside, City Backpackers looks extremely inviting and on the inside, it's bright, clean and airy. However, the big issue this hostel has is the noise. The pub stays open until the early hours and is guaranteed to keep you awake if you want an early night. Also, if you wish to socialise after 11pm, then the pub is the only place to do it as the tv room, garden and kitchen all close at this time! Absolutely ridiculous!

I also found the staff to be largely rude and unhelpful, as another review says, it seemed as if they would rather be elsewhere. I also recieved a frosty reception on account of my travelling with a suitcase rather than a backpack and was told I would not be allowed to stay in a dorm as a result. A hostel that discriminates on guests choice of luggage is not encouraging.

On the plus side, our room was clean and the bathroom facilities weren't bad.

If all you are looking for is a place to crash, then this hostel is ok, although it reminded us a little of a prison cell. It's advertised as the closest hostel to the transit centre, but there are others that are just as close, if not closer. And it's still about a 10 minute walk. It is in a lame part of the city. It's also pretty loud, with an onsite pub. The music is on all day, all night, so bring earplugs. The bathrooms were pretty clean and they're co-ed. The staff wasn't rude but definately didn't go out of their way to help out. Ok for just a stopover, but I wouldn't stay there any longer than necessary.

a very noisy hostel; having a pub attached, there is a constant trail of noisy drunk people banging in and out of rooms till about 2am.

They turned the aircon off one night (because some people complained of being cold) and the six of us crammed in our small room almost cooked. absolutely horrible.

however, the staff are friendly and make the best of it.

I've been travelling 10 months and have 8 to go. This hostel was by far the best place I've stayed so far. It is a busy place & well run. Bathrooms and kitchin were very new and always clean. I stayed 5 nights and each day my room was cleaned. This hostel has a great pool with city views, a garden on the roof and a "Real" Pub (pints & live music). The entertainment every afternoon was impressive & FREE, Water volleyball, Yoga, Chess & Taekwondo!! The staff were helpfull and seemed to always to be having fun. The location is central, I would stay again!!.

We stayed at this hostel for a week and found it to be a little dissapointing. I guess it all depends what you are looking for.the staff were often rude and obnoxious to us, often asking us to see our room keys as they didnt beleive we were guests. Also if you like the kitchen closing down at 12pm or lunch time for a minimum of an hour then this place is for you. I mean what a piss off when you wake up at 12 and cant even go make lunch. The up side is that the bar (Fidlers Elbow) was often happening with stuff happening almost every night. All in all it was alright, its quite a walk to george street and the casino where everything is happening but very close to the transit centre. If you are looking for a place to stay for just one night then youll be alright here, otherwise stay away.

Ps. Bathrooms were also very dirty and gross.

Most of the staff were great, friendly and receptive, they were always there to lend a hand with something or invite you out for a drink. The manager, however, proved to be a dissappointment. Although he has a good business sence he did not seem to care about the comfort of his clients. If a problem was brought to his attention, it seemed as though he did as little as he could to solve it. The hostel also does not seem to be thuroughly cleaned on a weekly basis which was a dissappointment to me as well.

Small and very basic rooms. It's a busy place in a dull part of town (it's near the transit centre if you need trains and buses, though). The staff seemed to want to be somewhere else which is probably how you'll feel, too.
