I stayed in this hostel for a number of weeks - mainly because I was broke, and working to save money to travel further north.

Admittedly I simply didn't like Brisbane. I thought it was a dull and unfriendly city. I heard great reviews of Yellow Submarine, and looked forward to seeing some much-needed friendly faces. The staff were ok - not overly-so, though - and the atmosphere in general was very cliquey and elitist. It's a long-stay hostel, and arriving on my own, I found it a bit frosty. In my time there, a gay couple left because of continuous and openly hostile comments, and one girl (a nurse) physically attacked another girl for interrupting a TV programme!

In addition, the place is just grotty - very higgeldy-piggeldy and rundown. I cleaned rooms for a couple of weeks in the morning, and was amazed at the state of the place - especially downstairs. It was crumbling, damp and smelly. The facilities aren't great - the shower area is small and exposed, with nothing but flimsy curtains for cover. And the television 'room' is a tin-roof with no walls!

I was amazed at the reputation this place has. It seems to think of itself as very cool, and that that's more important than actually providing facilities or a safe, comfortable place to stay.

I stayed in lots and lots of hostels during my time in Oz, and most were very friendly, if a little haphazard. I never prioritised swank over a fun time, but in they Yellow Submarine, you get neither!

I stayed there for 3 months 1998. became firm friends with Kath & Jim (see earlier review) and eagerley await their birth of their first child. Another success story is Claire & Tim who met there & get married Jan 04. Five years on I still see on a regular basis all the friends I made there. I cleaned the rooms for about two months too and there was never a dull moment! Thanks Judy & Ken for a great atmosphere which created so many great and enduring friendships.

its always said that the people make the difference to the hostel you are staying in and this place really emphasises that. i have travelled for 6 mnths now in oz and this is the first city hostel to have had such a friendly and warm atmosphere. great fun, great people, great atmosphere and great staff. there really is a effort made by everyone to get involved and include everyone, noone is left out and all are guaranteed a great time. come for one or two nights you'll end up staying at least a week - you gotta love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was really disappointed by this place especially after reading the reviews.

I found the atmosphere to be pretty cold and the both staff and the other guests were slightly snobby and elitist, for no good reason.

Also I don't expect grand luxury or privacy when staying in a hostel, but I wouldn't mind a bit more than just a flimsy curtain between me and the main TV area when I'm taking a shower.

Security was a joke, they may as well have just put a sign up saying no burgalars please.

The place was clean, but that's all I can really say about it.

I was manager for a good while and had a wonderful time and experience. I also met my partner there, now of five years and we are expecting our first child. No doubt we will take him/her back to see where it all began .... In room 24... known as the honeymoon suite. Ken and Judy will always have a special place in our hearts and of course Tess ... lots of love Kathy and Jim

i was there the same time as Karl and Judy did everything she could to find us work- probably to get us out from under her feet! The possums were great thought the TV 'room' is not the best for rainy nights- I was there for three weeks and loved it

I briefly visited Yellow Sub on my way up the coast and I am so sorry that I could not stay a bit longer! All the staff were so nice and the hostel itself is so homey and comfortable! I would recommend this hostel to anyone who is looking to get away from the whole lager-lad scene, but who still wants to have some FUN!
