BUG Review
This is a lovely hostel consisting of a few buildings set around a lovely swimming pool and gardens with a nice outdoor common area. What sets this place apart is attention to detail. The air-conditioned dorms have polished wood flooring, light peach and aqua green paint and comfortable single beds made up with flowery duvets. There are accents on the walls and the windows have wooden blinds. The bathrooms are immaculately clean with hairdryers and great shower heads. There are two clean fully-equipped kitchens, laundry facilities, internet access and staff provide fresh towels and plenty of friendly advice on tours and sightseeing. It is an intimate, safe and smiley hostel on a side road just far enough away from the noise of McLeod Street, but close enough to walk everywhere.

My husband and I stayed in a private room for 7 nights in July/August 2008. We loved Travellers Oasis! The hostel had a great tropical feeling, a perfect location, great amenities, and was extremely clean. The prices were great and I’d definitely stay there again!

Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable, although it was quite small and there wasn’t really any room to put our packs where we weren’t tripping over them. We had a bedside table, a small sink, and a bar fridge (fantastic!!) in the room, and a hammock and private table/chairs right outside our door. Although there was an air conditioner, it cost $1 to run for 3 hours. We didn’t end up using it because the ceiling fan was adequate, but it would probably be necessary during the heat and humidity of Cairns’ summer months.

As far as I could tell, there were 3 showers and 4 or 5 toilets shared between all of the guests. I never had to wait for the shower or toilet the entire time I was there even though the hostel was at full capacity. The atmosphere in the common areas was great (with a beautiful little pool and barbeque grill in the middle of it all) and seemed to be perfect for people wanting to meet socialize. Noise wasn’t a problem for us given the somewhat secluded location of our room. There were also 2 conveniently located kitchens, a TV room, and 4 washers/dryers ($3 per wash).

John at the front desk, who seemed to be the main staff member at the hostel, was amazing! He was incredibly helpful in every situation and always went out of his way to help make guests’ stays the best possible. They keep in stock a ton of travel and activity brochures along with restaurant coupons and activity listings in the main office. We booked 4 tours through him and they all turned out to be great! This worked out particularly well since the hostel provided free transportation to the reef terminal.

This is definitely one of the best hostels I have stayed at and I’d highly recommend it!

Great location in Cairns, but that's about it, March 4, 2007

Cons: Smelly sheets, paying for extras

First the good: great location and very friendly staff.

The bad: sheets and towels smelled like dirty washcloths (both times I stayed there!). Everything costs extra: air conditioning? Extra. Washing? $7/load (ridiculous!). Internet? SLOW, and yes you have to pay extra even with other hostels giving it away free.

Overall, I wouldn't stay here again.

I stayed here for one night in a twin room with a friend on July 28 2006; I booked at the last minute by phone so didn't know what to expect, but it turned out to be a very nice place. The room was quite big, very clean and tidy and near the bathrooms. The staff were all friendly and helpful. It's only 5 minutes away from the centre of town, but it's very nice not to be right next to all the restaurants and bars when you're trying to sleep. Very good value for money, I've stayed in several hotels which weren't as good.

This is, by far, the best hostel I have ever stayed in. The rooms are spacious and clean and the staff and owners friendly, welcoming and helpful.

When we checked in there were five of us but only four beds - Gabe and Kathy agreed to put an extra mattress in the room and adjust the price too! Extremely accommodatiing.

All of us who stayed have nothing but good things to say about this hostel - you MUST stay here if you come to Cairns - its the best!

June 19 2006, Rotterdam

Dear BUG Australia,

I wanted to suggest a very nice hostel, actually 2 hostels. The first 1 is called “Tropic Days” it is located in Cairns, about 10 min from Cairns central on Bunting Street. When I and my partner started our journey through Australia we flew into Cairns. Via a lot of other people with connections we arrived the same day at Tropic Days. This hostel was so warming and homey, that it immediately felt like home. The hostel has about 6 bathrooms (which get cleaned everyday, and when I say clean it is clean that you can almost eat of the floor). There are several kitchens with all the appliances you name it, they got it. You also get a free meal for every night that you stay.

We travelled to and from several places in the first 3 or 4 weeks. And every time we came back to Tropic Days. We bought a car and travelled all the way around Australia and finally arrived back in Cairns. Because we had an open year ticket sometimes we thought about going home from another place, but every time after thinking for a while we decided to go back to Cairns and stay at Tropic Days. Once we came back in Cairns we were walking down the street and all of a sudden, I heard someone shout my name. I was surprised as it was the owner of the hostel pulling over and running towards us. We heard they had bought another hostel in the time we had travelled around.

This one is called “Travellers Oasis” this is located on the beginning of Scott Street. Another piece of heaven on earth, also with a number of bathrooms and super clean kitchens. You don’t get the free meal but it is a 2 min walk to Cairns Central. They both got a really nice pool and hammocks in the garden. There are several places throughout the hostel to hang out, read or just chat. They both also have courtesy busses with free airport pick-up and drop-of.

The rooms have got air-conditioning and it is even possible to camp in the back yard. A double room costs $48.00 per night; a camp spot for one person costs $11.00. They also have dorm beds and twin beds. Doubles rooms have got their own fridge and television.

We loved the people that helped us and supported us in times of need. For example we bought a car, but had nothing. The owner gave us chairs, gas cooker, cutlery and all other kinds of things. They really deserve the best of all and people should know about this place, they deserve to get to know this place and have a really great time there.

On Monday and Thursday night they have entertainment nights. Monday there is a barbeque where you can taste and try to eat crocodile and kangaroo and lots of other pasta’s, salads and snags. Usually there is a quiz after that and everyone has the best time. Winners always get rewarded with either a very nice t-shirt of the hostel or sometimes you can even win a trip for example out to the reef. Thursday is pizza night, you pay $8,- and they order as much pizza as you can eat and you get 1 free beer or wine, it’s absolutely fabulous!!!

It is also possible to book your tours there; they are of great help and in general get the best prices.

I truly hope that you will take these comments into consideration when composing the next lonely planet. You have been of great help to me when I was travelling I’d like other people to have the same chance. All my best regards, Robin Langbroek

We unfortunately only stayed here for one night, but I would have stayed longer. The staff, Gabe and Kathy were outstanding (even managing to get my phone to me after I left it there!) and were a great help with arranging the necessary diving trips. The rooms were absolutely lovely, newly decorated and spotlessly clean, and the toilets are checked every few hours. The atmosphere was relaxing and nice, it is not a big hostel so it felt nice and intimate and easy to speak with people. There were also lovely areas for chilling out by the pool. The only whinge I have is that there were no en-suites available but this was really not a problem as there are plenty of toilets and showers - and most importantly they are close by!

Gabe and Cathy (and chilli pepper!) are doing a great job, having just taken over this hostel. The kitchens and dorm rooms are very clean, and each bedroom has air-conditioning. There is also a pool in the centre of the hostel. The mall is only a 5 minute walk, and the esplanade is a 15 minute walk. The hostel was pretty quiet when we stayed, but its great just to chill out and relax.

Guido Wielinga from Holland:

The time I've spend there was the best ever. It is under new ownership, and these owners know how to do it the right way. Absolutely the place to be for backpackers. If you consider going to upper Queensland, contact "Traveller's Oasis" or "Tropic Days" and have a nice stay near the rainforrest and the Great barrier reef. There are lot's of things to do in Cairns, Gabriel and Kathy can organise everything you want. Looking for "tree kangaro's" up in the Table Lands..., is a must. Come get lost with Gabe ! Also there's plenty of midnight playground, like "The Woolshed" , "Samuels" , a foam party.... and lot's more. One day I'll come back to Cairns, and return to this backbackers for sure!
