I'm 61 years old woman who has never experienced a back-packers hostel until now. What a great "first time" experience. My friend and I had our own room which was clean and comfortable with good bedding and linen. The thing that impressed was the continuing "hands on" service from Gary and Sheryl. Nothing was too much trouble, including stopping for a friendly chat. ALL the international back-packers we met assured us this was not a typical hostel experience. "This is awesome" was a phrase we heard from many young people. We shared the little cottage with really interesting strangers. On the balcony (complete with bbq) we shared great conversation, and on our last night was entertained by a young man from the UK with guitar and song. Loved the whole experience, it was the most memorable part of our Queensland holiday. Don't let the young ones have all the fun!

The friendly hostel was hands down the best hostel Ive stayed in ever, the rooms are so homely and to have a kitchen and lounge almost to yourself was absoloutely great. Í'm almost gutted I stumbled accross it so early in my trip as I know nothing will beat it. The staff are soo friendly, and Coral and Heather went out of their way to mother me and make me feel at home! That combined with easily booking Fraser and Whitsunday trips through them made this the best hostel ever.

The Friendly Hostel was so good, it was nice to be able to go out and party hard - it is walking distance to all of the hot bars - and know that when you get back you are not going to have someone jump on top of you - 'cos there's no bunks! The staff are fantastic and a good laugh - you can relax and feel right at home. The whole place is absolutely spotless and the service and facilities faultless. They gave the best advice on tours that I have had throughout the whole of the East coast and even had fabulous tips on what to do around Hervey Bay. I ended up staying for a week when I had only expected to stay a day becuase I had heard so many bad things about Hervey Bay - ask them about Tom's aboriginal tour - cheap and the best tour I have done anywhere in Australia. Keep up the good work guys - and Lonely Planet sucks!!

After spending a lot of time (and money) on inferior accommodation along the East coast, we stumbled upon the Friendly hostel almost by accident - it was one of many in the Lonely Planet. We were in luck though! Here was a hostel with proper sized beds, which you didn't have to make yourself, a large, clean kitchen shared between a maximum of six people, and staff who were truly friendly and knew virtually everything there was to know about Fraser Island. Absolutely the best value for money and our most comfortable stay on the East coast.

When all of our wallets and purse was stolen from Billabong we stayed here after Fraser Island and it was very much better. The staff is nicer and more friendly and the king size double bed is nicer and the hostel is cleaner. The kitchen has more things to cook in. Also they took us to the bus stop the next morning and our wallet was not stolen here - it has much more security.

We have just had a fantastic time at "the Friendly". It is so much like being at home, everything is there down to having an iron and ironing board. We even borrowed a mixer and baking pans so we could make a cake in the real oven. There are huge lockers for each person in the dorms (that only have 3 people and real beds with fabulous mattresses) and you can lock both your room and your little apartment so security is really good. If you just want to chill out for a few days this is the place to do it. It was raining while we were there so we waited a few days to go to Fraser (the booking service and information you are given here is second to none as well) there is a great selection of DVD movies for hire and with our cake, a glass of white and a good movie - we really didn't need anything else! The hostel is spotless and the staff terrific and soooo helpful. We'll definitely be staying here again and would recommend it to everyone.

I went to the Friendly Hostel and thought it was lovely. It is very small with a homely atmosphere. It is very clean with excellent facilities and NO bunk beds! It has a fab verandah and the rooms are in individual units so you feel it is a flat share rather than hostel.
