Having been new to the whole backpacking thing n done some research of the hostels , regrettably after having stayed in various hostels.I found it incredible that some one could dare say anything bad about kookaburra hostel.

As i say it is a home from home as it is like big house , fat cats , family atmospere , a repitoire of ten delicious evening meals , that rock!!Staff were fab from the first person we met some Irish bombshell to the owner who we think is an Italian mafia leader in hiding , but was hugely entertaining.Yes George was his name.

The best bit of all, was for 18 dollars a nite we got dinner n breaky , free tea n coffee all day.Go there relax n enjoy the finer things. Thanks a mill from the London girls.

Friendly hostel in a lovely building which was formerly a hospital. Access to a very comfortable sitting room (maybe not quite big enough for all the residents) with TV and video, and internet access (although the worn out keyboards made my e mails something of a guessing game!). Resident cat and pretty gardens. A bit manic as so many people were coming to and returning from Fraser Island resulting in too many people getting up very early in the morning (i.e. 5 a.m. in the case of my room-mates). Pick up from the bus station in the mini bus was efficient and friendly. The bedroom was crowded but there was an en suite bathroom. The best bit was the evening meal, 10 different dishes, freshly cooked, you could just choose whatever you wanted and have a lovely delicious plateful. Breakfast was included too but the margarine, sliced bread and pots of jam were uninspiring. Hervey Bay is also very quiet indeed, not much to do, you probably wouldn't want to stay for too long.

Really value for money!!

You get a double room for 40 dollar, includes breakfast and dinner (where you can choose between 7 meals!!)

GREAT!

I found this hostel to be a bit dissapointing. I cant make my mind up if the owners have become fed up with Backpackers abusing the hostel or are there to make a quick buck. They offer an evening meal and breakfast in the price of the accommadation and they do pickups and drop off into town. The staff are very nice and very helpful. ie Fraser Bookings. The general hostel isnt that great lovely mattresses covered in PVC that makes the sheets to small so you end up fighting with the sheet. Lack of privacy in the Bathrooms I.E. No door and lovely glass partitions to divide the shower cubicles added to the very tired feel about he place

This family run Hostel has to be one of the best hostels I have stayed in during my time in Australia. Staff were extremely helpful, especially the Bus drivers who were more than willing to go out of their way and buzz you about the place. The staff really looked after everyone as if we were part of the family. Its conveniently located, only a couple of minutes walk to the beach and shops. I would definitely recommend this Hostel....Where else would you get Breakfast and Dinner included in the price of your accomodation. Three cheers for the chef!
