This hostel has the most amazing location - it's so beautiful. Don't expect to do much while on Magnetic - there really isn't anything to do. Go there to chill & sunbathe. Believe me... you'll slip into the atmos pretty quickly. The bar now shuts at 12.30 so it's alright if you head to bed early-ish. If you're lucky enough, you'll get a room where you'll be able to hear the waves gently crashing onto the beach as you fall asleep (once the music has stopped & the pissheads have gone to bed that is) Enjoy!!! I loved it and will definitely be back :o)

first of all the 3 stars are for location only which is right on the beach and is perfect in every way. however, the facilties are the worst i stayed in whilst in australia. the kitchen is ill-equipt, the bathroom is a long dark walk away at night and, aside from the pool and beach, there is naff all to do. the party atmosphere is rather 'youth club' and it goes on well into the night so don't expect to sleep if you go to bed before 4am.

Trekking up the east coast of OZ has brought me to some pretty amazing places. One place however stands out above the rest. This place I speak of is base Backpackers on Magnetic Island. Ive got 2 words for you: F**king Amazing. Upon arriving I was absolutely astounded, the hostel looked more like a tropical resort than a hostel. Once checked in I made my way down to the bar which I must say is most impressive (picture yourself sitting at the bar while looking out over the beautiful Great Barrier Reef, something that us English rarely experience. Once I had my free jug of tropical cocktails (which I got through a deal called 2 night steal ) I made my way to the beach side pool. It was here that I remained for about 3 hours due to the girls (wow) and the lazy boy chair that just wouldnt let me get up. Did I mention the white-bikini clad goddess. Apparently the dress code is minimal. Overall the hostel is fantastic, the staff were very helpful, the hostel itself is clean and comfortable and the setting is well.epic. Giddy up!

Good location, but crowded and noisy, November 24, 2004

Nice location, being on the beach and in walking distance of Rocky Bay and Picnic Bay.

However the dormitories were rather crowded and rather noisy due to music videos being played loudly in the main (only) common area late into the night.

The place is evidently geared very much towards people intent on partying, rather than those wanting a relaxed hodiday.

Some of the package deals offered for staying here weren't particularly good value, only a couple of dollars less than paying for the ferry (a bit less than $20 return) and accomodation seperately. The dinner included in the package I bought was a small portion of Thai chicken.
