I cannot stress enough how good the beach shack is! From the BBQ's- (done every other night $6) to the spa baths, yes SPA BATHS and a mix of some of the friendliest staff i've met, made this without doubt the best hostel i've stayed at in OZ!The rooms, although nothing magical, are spotlessly clean, have air-conditioning and the biggest room with en-suite! En-suite including spa bath! Ha don't even have one of those at home!Cooking facilities are also excellent, very clean, new and as with everything in the hostel, very homely!A very nice feature of this hostel is the TV room, which is very important considering Mission Beach's placement in the middle of the wet tropics! Has a really big TV with SKY, DVD, VHS the works and new dvd's each week to play with!Overall i really don't think that this hostel could get much better! As a place to relax in friendly comfortable surroundings, Beach Shack is number 1!

Ah man just go to this hostel if you are anywhere near it. The atmosphere is awesome, v.laid back, and there's always people around to chat to, and current managers Eliot and Nick are legends, who will be very nice and helpful to you and make you feel so at home. And the place itself is also pretty awesome, colourful and fresh, with a nice TV room and a pool like a big pond (but quite a bit cleaner) and a kitchen where there is all the cutlery and crockery you could dream of. Unlike any other hostel I've ever stayed at, obviously much better than all the rest, just go to Mission Beach and enjoy it.

This place is pretty nice - its just like a big house and is practically on the beach. You can hire bikes for free (although they are not the best quality) and the pool table is free too. Every other day they do a BBQ for $5 which is great and the apple crumble is the best! However, there are only 2 bathrooms for the whole place so if someone decides to have a bath there can be a long queue! Rooms weren't exactly spotless either.

What an amazing place, I almost have difficulty calling it a hostel. A beautiful private home turned into a haven for travelers is closer to the mark. Rooms from doubles to the large ten bed dorm upstairs (which was a blast to stay in, think slumber party with all your friends) an amazing kitchen, fabulous pool with waterfall, big screen satelite T.V. and the most important thing, giant jacuzzi bath tubs! The beach was a short walk across the street and in a few weeks they will be doing their own reef trips on a recently purchased and retrofitted boat. If the boat is run with the same attitude and homey feel that the hostel has, it will be one of the best reef trips around!Thank you Bob, Ina & Stacy for turning your beautiful home into a hostel for all of us to share with you, and for your generous hospitality.

This place is by no means a shack... it's the most beautiful house built by an achitect who decided to turn it into a hostel. I stayed here in September 2002 and was blown away by the place. The dorm rooms are a little cramped but the common areas are fantastic - big screen television, leather couches, dishwasher, whirlpool tub in the bathroom, balcony with pool table. The guy who built the place (Bob?) is probably the nicest guy I've ever met and really cares that everyone enjoys their stay. He puts together an amazing BBQ evey second night for $5 a person and everything is homemade... even the apple crumble that he bakes himself. The house is right across from the beach and a five minute walk to town. The pool is beautiful and there's an open air dining area in the back. Trust me, you will love this hostel. If you like kayaking, make sure to book a one day trip to Dunk Island with Coral Sea Kayaking (the front desk can book this for you) - it was a highlight of my trip.
