Yah it's not the ritz, but who is interested in staying in luxurious places when you're backpacking? It's the ppl you meet that make your stay worthwhile. You will definitley meet some amazing ppl from staff to all the guests at surf n sun. It's a smaller hostel and has amazing atmosphere for that reason. Great location, close to the beach and not too far of a walk into town. Everynight the staff take you out and make punch giving everyone an opportunity to save money at the bars getting them pissed before they go out. I would recommend this hostel to anyone backpacking around australia. You'll have an awesome time!!!!!

I only stayed in the Surf n Sun for 3days but in that 3 days i was introduced to a friendly staff offered a job and went out partying everynight, each day is a differant theme from Killer Punch nights to Club Crawl with free entry and free drinks on saturdays. this is a great hostel and dont be too quick to judge it from the building it is in, there is more to this hostel than thin walls and rusty hinges. Give it time ..you will love it!

Basic room with no fan or aircon! The carpet was smelly too! Shower and wc were clean and worked fine. Female Staff cleaned rooms in hotpants which is a nice sight to wake up to!!! Securty is in bad shape tho! No lockers in rooms and a large theft occured in a room upstairs while we were there,.

Had a wonderful stay. Wish it could have been longer. Staff were friendly and helped me book some tours and a bus to the airport. Lots of space in the rooms...and a bathroom and TV. I found the Kitchen and Dining room very clean. And the TV area was a great place to hang out and watch a video on a cloudy day. Went out drinking far too many nights tho. It was too much fun. Free entry and a free drink every night... how could I resist. Watch out for 70's night they'll dress you up in all sorts of dodgy clothes and fill you full of Punch for $4. Surf n Sun has made my trip to Australia very memorable. Thanks to the staff!!

I am surprised to read the other reviews, maybe it is because we stayed in a double room but the bathrooms available to us (not en suite) were disgusting. Lonely Planet indicated all rooms have en suite but I don't think the double rooms do - at least ours didn't. The kitchen and dining room areas were also disgusting. The place needs a good clean! I am surprised they don't have a problem with cockroaches because people left food particles all over the eating area and it never seemed to get cleaned. Also our room really stank of mold and it was expensive compared to other hostels in the area. We moved to another one down the road which was cheaper and cleaner and did have en suites.

Good for people travelling alone or in groups. Rooms and bathrooms were cleaned daily, and there was something happening every night I was there, from theme nights 2 pub crawls. Staff were friendly, helpful and very social with backpackers. Pool nice and clean.Being across the road from the beach was really nice.

The owner and staff are all very friendly, the place is chilled or active and its your choice which. Loads of great people hang out here. The beach is but a stone through away and the town is a short walk to the entertaining night life, which the hostel would like you to get envolved with. The trips are great fun and well planned, and if you have any questions and need any help there are loads of people to ask! Great place to meet people if you're travelling on your own.

My partner and I stayed at this hostel in June 2002 for a couple of nights, it really is a great hostel, they organise activities for almost every night I think, good atmosphere with the staff very friendly and very helpful. Would recommend staying here to anyone. Beach, shops and pubs close, but not so close that you are kept awake from being in the centre of it all!!!!!
