we loved staying here the staff were so friendly we managed to be able to buy our van from the notice board, all the facilities were not cheap, ie internet the more hours you buy the cheaper it gets and, laundry try and wash early so you dont have to pay for a dryer. there wasnt much of an atmosphere when we stayed but there wasnt many backpackers there so we had a restful few days ahhh. loved sitting on the balcony eating tea when sun going down nothing better.

This is a very non-YHA hostel. Feels like an independent one. Staff very blase, non-welcoming and too cool to be in customer service. This is such a shock as my experiences of YHA hostels in Australia and New Zealand to-date have been excellent. I'm really disappointed. Room was incredibly basic, beds were creaky, and once again, it felt like a cheap independent hostel. And it smells of old socks. I intended to stay here a few nights but didn't.

There isn't really anything bad to say about this hostel...it had a fully equipped kitchen and was clean and quiet with an awesome tv room. The rooms felt very crowded but this was partly due to the backpack sized lockers for every bed so the cramped quarters were worth it. I would highly recommend it as a place for recovering from jet lag but if you want to stay somewhere that people talk to one another go elsewhere. The complaints below about atmosphere are more than justified.

After seeing a number of the bad reviews on atmosphere ... I guess you need to have priorities on what you are looking for in a Hostel. If I want to party, I'll goto a nightclub in Chicago. I came to Australia to hike and see the country side. Clean showers, no bugs, great kitchens and well organized. It was also in a nice location to walk into central Adelaide and see the city. We enjoyed our stay as we were only there to sleep and clean up. The mattresses where thin and it could get noisy as we were staying next to the ally. I would stay here if you get the chance.

I stayed at Adelaide Central a number of times in 2002 and 2003.

I think it was the best backpackers in Adelaide I've seen - excellent value for money, clean, reliable.

A nice place - if your old and particular. If you want some fun check out one of the hostels. THE YHA always finds a way to make a hostel gloomy.

As with many YHAs this hostel is very large, but it has a lovely relaxed lounge area & excellent kitchen facilities and is therefore surprisingly sociable for it's size. If you don't like YHA's then don't stay here, if you do like them then this is one of the best you will find. (Spottlessly clean as well)

To whoever wrote the previous review. Are you really from Vancouver? All the bases covered you claim, so I went there and I couldn't get a beer. I moved out to a backpackers so I could have a drink, and have some fun. A hostel ran like that YHA is a War Crime where I come from.

my stay at the y.h.a was shocking i couldnt have come to a more uninviting place if i looked. the staff need to be more aware of their guests needs and also need to be more strict about the privacy of their guests staying there. Its hard enough for tourists finding a good cheap place to stay but to come to a place like this it jus really isnt worth the time and money!
