I read those reviews as i started to go to Melbourne from Sydney in Feb, 2003. All the reviews about this place is absolute right! It's a dirty, awful, unsafe place. Food even would be stolen in fridge. The bed is made noisy as you sleep. Every one just thanks God when he/she checks out... Don't choose this hostel unless you wanna experience how uncomfortable about this one.

What ever you do don't stay here, it would probably be better to sleep in the street. The people who own and work for the place don't communicate very well, there is no security, the place is filthy, it is inhabited by vagabonds and tramps. I would compare this place to Skid row or a homeless shelter. Avoid this place at all costs. I was afraid to go to sleep. Plus its expensive and the "owners" will tell you they have what you want only to get thier and find out they lied, worst mistake of my trip to Melbourne.

terrible place to stay but we had no choice. we were in melbourne for the grand prix in March 2003 and everywhere else was booked out. the staff cannot communicate in english, they charged the entire 3 nights which we booked by phone to my visa without telling me, there is a grumply old man with a grey beard who wanders round complaining (staff), it smells, its dirty, security is terrible with strays wandering in off the streets all the time. don't go here - its crap. if it had an atmosphere about it then that would be something but none.

I booked into this hostel for a week without reading thesereviews first, wish I had. It is the worst hostel I have stayed in, can't wait to leave, it really does stink - I am sharing with a tramp at the moment and it is disgusting. The Management refuse to refund me so I can move on, my budget doesn't allow me to just think "sod it"Cannot recommend it at all - avoid at all costs.

I booked into Elizabeth Hostel after seeing it on the internet and reading recommendations for it imy travellers guide, big mistake!!! wish I come across thesereviews first. It is the worst hostel i have stayed in yet in my time in Oz, totally agreewith the previous comments made on 10th January, I think I am sharing with a tramp - the room stinks and it is disgusting. I asked for my money back but was told there is a no refund policy, this is contrary to most other hostels, looks like I am going to have to stick it out or lose out from my limited budget. Cant recommend it at allKenny Boy

...the previous occupant had used it as his own private toilet. My bed sheet had cigarette holes burnt in it. The floor had big bad smelling stains all over it. The abundance of dirty old men that smoked and spat in the kitchen indicated that this was a vagrant hostel rather than a backpackers hostel.

I booked this hostel before seeing the reviews on this site and spent quite a few days in trepidation before arriving there to find I had nothing to worry about! It's not a 5 star hotel but it's of the same adequate standard of some hostels I've stayed in around Oz this trip and far better than others!

This place doesn't even deserve one star, what a disappointment!!!!!We walked off the street and booked two nights accommodation without checking the rooms first. After seeing the rooms we decided we could not possibly stay in such dirty and disgusting conditions, so we asked to cancel our booking and to get our money back. They refused to give any of our money back and the manager would not talk to us. We rang the consumers institute and they agreed that this was infair. Luckily we paid via credit card, we were able to reverse the payment. This was a disappointing start to our adventure in Melbourne.

After a one week stay in this dirty, dilapitated "hostel", I made a complaint to the Health Department. I was told by an officer at the department, that Elizabeth Hostel wasn't even registered with them! Need I say more? If wasting your money on a dirty, stinking hostel is your idea of an "adventure holiday", then this is the place for you!
